Replace the upper andlower seal halves as a unit to ensure leak-free operation.RemovalTo replace the rear main oil seal, the transmission must beremoved. Refer to the service manual for the properprocedure.1.2.3.4.5.Remove the tlywheel or torque converter drive plate.Remove the oil pan. Refer to the Oil Pan Removal,'Oiling System' section of this chapter, for theprocedure.Remove the rear main bearing cap (No. 7).Push the upper seal out of the groove. Ensure that thecrankshaft is not damaged.Remove the lower half of the seal from the bearing cap.Installation1.2.3.4.5.6.7.8.9.Wipe the seal surface area of the crankshaft until itis clean.Apply a thin coat of engine oil.Coat the lip of the seal with engine oil.Position the upper seal into the groove in thecylinder block. The lip of the seal faces toward thefront of the engine.Place the lower half of the seal into the bearing cap.Coat both sides of the lower seal end tabs with MoparGasket-in-a-Tube, or equivalent. DO NOT applysealant to the lip of the seal.Coat the outer curved surface of the lower seal withsoap and the lip of the seal with engine oil.Position the lower seal into the bearing cap recess andseat it firmly.Coat both chamfered edges of the rear main bearingcap with Mopar Gasket-in-a-Tube, or equivalent.Caution: DO NOT apply sealant to the cylinder blockmating surfaces of the rear main bearing cap becausethe bearing-to-journal clearance will be altered.IO. Install the rear main bearing cap.11, Tighten all main bearing bolts to 108 Nom (80 ft-lbs)torque.VIBRATION DAMPERThe vibration damper is balanced independently and thenrebalanced as part of the complete crankshaft assembly. DONOT attempt to duplicate original damper balance holeswhen installing a service replacement. The vibration damper is not repairable and is serviced onlyas a complete assembly.A loose vibration damper or damage to the dampercushions may be misdiagnosed as engine bearing noise.4.2L Vibration DamperReplacement damper compatible with productioncrankshaft and piston-rod weight. For 4.2L engine withstandard belt (only).PS249535Vibration damper.4.2L MPI Vibration DamperA damper kit for use with Jeep 4.2L MPI fuel injection kits.P.5249687 1981-90 CJ and YJ with V-belt.P.5249688 1981-90 CJ and YJ with serpentine belt.Removal1. Remove the drive belt(s).2. Remove the retaining bolts and separate the vibrationdamper pulley (V-belt ONLY) from the vibrationdamper.3. Use a vibration damper removal tool to remove thedamper from the crankshaft.InstallationWith the key in position, align the key slot of thevibration damper hub with the crankshaft key and tapthe damper onto the crankshaft.Install the vibration damper retaining bolt and washer.Tighten the bolt to 108 Nom (80 ft-lbs) torque. If thecrankshaft turns before the damper bolt torque valve isattained, the crankshaft can be prevented from turningby placing two 5/16 x 1-1/2" bolts into the damperfront pulley holes and wedging a bar between them.Rotate the bar until it contacts the frame member toprevent the crankshaft from turning.Install the damper pulley (V-belt only) and retainingbolts. Tighten the bolts to 27 Nom (20 ft-lbs) torque.Install the drive belt(s) and tighten to the specifiedtension. Refer to the service manual for the properspecifications and procedures.r -T-Ic
