I.~~~~246 MOPAR PERFORMANCE PARTSAccessoriesUsually, once the spark plug wire is installed, pulling on thewire to remove the boot from the plug is the most commoncause of failure. This is especially true of non-standardproduction or “cheap” wires. Using the Mopar PerformanceParts spark plug wire boot puller (P524971S) will help plugwire removal without damaging the connector. The bootpuller will probably double the wire life, making it one ofthe best deals in the ignition area.MOpar Performance Parts spark plug wires have straightends at the spark plug, which is the most common style.Having been in racing for many years, we know thatstraight ends are not best for all applications, especiallywith headers. In an effort to solve this problem, we haveintroduced vari-angle plug adapters (P4286742) whichadjust easily from straight to right angles. Our plug wire separator package (P4007667) keeps thewires separated from the cap to the plug. This helpsperformance by preventing cross firing and makes theengine compartment look much more organized.Spark Plug Wire Boot PullerHere’s the tool you need for easy removal of spark plugwires without pulling the wire out of the terminal end andboot. Saves on knuckles, too.P.5249718 Spark plug wire boot puller.Vari-Angle Plug AdaptersHere’s a convenient way to steer spark plug wires aroundheaders, brackets, and other tight areas, in any directionyou want. Vari-angle plug adapters have a built-in swiveldevice which maintains the position you bend them in. Ahandy set-up for any racer. This can causeproblems if a high-amp rated switch (such as P3690282)isn’t used. P3690282 is an 18-20 amp rated switch, whilemost readily available switches are 14-16 amp rated. Thelower rating causes more resistance in the ignition circuit, which cuts down on the voltage available to the ignition’s:ontrol unit. The lower voltage can cause the ignitionystem to perform poorly or develop a miss which can beery difficult to analyze.Ignition SwitchesP3690282P3690823“On-Off’ micro switch assembly(20 amp).Push button starter switch assembly.GENERAL IGNITION SYSTEM PERFORMANCE TIPSOne of the most important items in ignition is to check theTDC timing mark on the vibration damper to be sure that itreads zero when the piston is at TDC.Problems such as “pinging,” flat spots, poor idle andmisfires can be caused by a bad ignition system, but theymay also be caused by problems with the MPI system.Problems caused by a poor fuel system or ignition systemhave many similar symptoms. There is no substitute for agood mechanic when these problems are encountered. On any vehicle that is being converted to a race vehicle, westrongly recommend the steering column lock be removed. If things go wrong with the engine with the vehicle movingand the column lock is working, the drives wouldn’t be ableto steer and could have an accident.Grounds are very important, especially in a race vehicle. The engine should be grounded to the body and to theframe. The control box should be grounded to the engine.Painted surfaces make poor grounds - sand paint or othersurface material off and ground metal-to-metal.There are 2 special switches that are helpful in wiring a racevehicle: “On-Off’ Micro Switch Assembly (20 amp-P3690282); and, Push Button Starter Switch Assembly(P3690823). The “On-Off’ Micro Switch Assembly is themost important. Other “econo” switches aren’t rated as highon amperage and therefore put resistance between thebattery and the ignition and can cause misfiring.A volt meter is recommended for a race vehicle so that thebattery’s power can be checked frequently. If the battery’svoltage gets to be less than 12.0 volts, the ignition systemmay function inadequately resulting in poor performanceand lost races. Also measure what the voltage is at theignition system itself.
