Release snap ring and remove the plunger cap, meteringvalve, plunger, check valve assembly and plungerreturn spring from the tappet body (Figure 2-72). Retaincomponents of each tappet separately.2.3.4.Clean the components of each tappet assembly incleaning solvent to remove all varnish, gum and sludgedeposits.Inspect for indications of scuffing on the side and baseof each tappet body.Inspect each tappet base for concave wear with astraightedge positioned across the base. If the base isconcave, the corresponding lobe on camshaft is alsoworn. Replace the camshaft and defective tappets.Assembly1. Install the plunger return spring, check valveassembly, plunger, metering valve and plunger cap inthe tappet body.2.Compress the plunger assembly by exerting force on theplunger cap with the pushrod and install the snap ring.InstallationNote: It is not recommended to fill the tappets with oil asthis may make the engine difficult to start. The tappets willcharge themselves within three to eight minutes once theengine has been started.I. Coat each tappet assembly in Mopar Super OilConditioner, or equivalent.2.3.4.5.6.7.TAPPO \/BODY J8909-97Figure 2 - 72Use a hydraulic valve tappet removal/installation toolto install each tappet in the same bore from where itwas originally removed.Install the pushrods in their original locations.Install the rocker arms and bridge and pivot assembliesat their original locations. Loosely install thecapscrews at each bridge.Tighten the capscrews alternately, one turn at a time, toavoid damaging the bridges. Tighten the capscrews to26 N*m (1 9 ft-lbs) torque.Pour the remaining Mopar Super Oil Conditioner (orequivalent) over the entire valve actuating assembly.The Mopar Super Oil Conditioner (or equivalent) mustremain with the engine oil for at least I600 km ( 1,000miles); however, it does not need to be drained until thenext scheduled oil change.Install the cylinder head cover. Refer to Cylinder HeudCover Installation, ‘Cylinder Head’ section of thischapter, for the procedure.
