OFF-ROADING AND RACING 4671. Maga,.’ 71nes2.Articles in magazines are one of the best ways to getpublicity. Keep in mind that drag racing magazinesaren’t interested in off-road vehicles, and off-roadmagazines don’t want articles on drag racers. Beingsomething special (unique) is important to magazinesbecause they have the whole country from which topick their featured vehicles.Hometown Newspupers and Racing NewspapersRacing newspapers usually concentrate on reportingrace results - who won and how fast they went. Theyare difficult to get coverage in until you start to win.Hometown newspapers, on the other hand, are muchmore interested in the “local angle.” However, theirsportswriters usually understand football orbaseball (for example), but not racing. This meansyou have to help educate them. Explain your sportand your vehicle. Perhaps take the writer to anevent. Get them excited about racing, and inparticular, your race program. Keep them up-to-dateon your accomplishments (especially yourvictories) throughout the season. The responsibility for getting publicity always lies with you,the racer. If you don’t do something to promote yourvehicle, then someone else will get the publicity, even iftheir vehicle isn’t as nice or as fast as yours. Magazines havea lot of vehicles to pick from, so you must bring your vehicleto their attention. Newspapers have many different sports topick from; you not only have to convince them that you havesomething special (newsworthy) to offer, but you must helpthem with background material on the sport itself.Governing Body ProblemsIf you’ve ever raced in any organized (sanctioned)competition, most likely you had complaints and/orproblems with the governing body. In most cases this is dueto a lack of communication and/or failure to read the rulebook. Safety violations are the most common, yet they arethe easiest to avoid. You should always pay close attentionto governing body rules concerning safety; after all, they’retrying to save your life.Other than safety issues, most problems with governingbodies fall into two categories: classification and legalities.1. Cluss(ficationA majority of complaints concern classification. Thegoverning body tries to put various vehicles, engines, etc., into appropriate classes to make everyonecompetitive. Problems arise concerning horsepowerfactors, weight, engine restrictions, etc. Your ideas, suggestions, and opinions should be directed to the localand/or national representatives of the governing body.2. LegalitiesMost legal problems concern the engine. The rulebooks allow certain changes. These rules must befollowed to be legal and competitive. Cutting a rule tooclose is a gamble which is usually not worth it. Forexample, if the minimum allowable cylinder headvolume is 7 I .O cc and you mill your head to 71 .O cc,you’re gambling that the tech inspector in the tech area, under less than ideal conditions and with differentequipment than your own, won’t measure it at 70.5. 1/2cc is not worth the gamble.
