l- - 7 1428 MOPAR PERFORMANCE PARTSLean-Burn IgnitionThe lean-burn ignition system was introduced in the mid-1970s on production cars. It was a specialized version ofthe breaker point-type ignition system. For high performance applications, this ignition system istoo complicated and worrisome, and it can’t be utilizedwith a high output electronic ignition system, which is thesystem Mopar Performance Parts recommends.MagnetosA magneto is a completely different ignition system fromany other detailed in this section. A properly set up and tunedmagneto will fire a very high output race engine. However, magnetos have more spark scatter than race electronicdistributors and have a large amount of spark retard withspeed. The spark retard can be as high as 1 degree perthousand rpm. Another problem with magnetos is that theywill “go away” in a short period of time and slow the vehicledown. And because they don’t “miss” like other ignitionsystems, racers can’t easily tell if the ignition is not doing itsjob, a problem that can be almost impossible to find.SOLID STATE IGNITION (SSI) IGNITION SYSTEMA Solid State Ignition (SSI) system is used on the 360AMC V-8 engine. The SST system consists of thefollowing components:Ignition moduleIgnition coilResistance wireDistributor0 Knock sensorCap and rotorSpark plugs and wiresThe central tower on the distributor cap is connecteddirectly to the high voltage at the coil. The current flowsthrough the spring-loaded contact on the rotor to the carbonbutton in the cap. The rotor tip aligns with a contact in thecap that corresponds to the cylinder to be ignited just as theignition coil output high voltage is applied to the rotor. Inthis way, each spark plug is “fired” in turn.SSI IGNITION COMPONENTSIgnition ModuleThe electronic Ignition Module is located in the enginecompartment on the left wheel well. It is a permanentlysealed, solid state module that is not repairable and must bereplaced as a unit if service is required. The ignition module processes the ignition signals itrecseives from the distributor and then interrupts the primarycircuit to the ignition coil causing spark to occur. Dwell isadjusted automatically. When disconnecting SSI system connectors, pull themapart with a firm, straight pull. DO NOT attempt to prythem apart with a screwdriver. When connecting them, press together firmly to overcome hydraulic pressurecaused by the silicone dielectric compound. If the connector locking tabs weaken or break off, DO NOTreplace the associated component. Bind the connectorstogether with tape or a harness tie strap to assure goodelectrical connection.Distributor360 AMC V-8 distributors are equipped with centrifugaland vacuum assisted advance to advance the engine timingthe correct number of degrees during engine operation. The distributor consists of three groups of components:pickup coil and trigger wheel, ignition advancemechanisms, cap and rotor. The distributor driver gear isinstalled on the distributor shaft and meshes with a spiralcut gear that is installed on the nose (front) of the camshaft. The end of the distributor shaft is flattened and fits into aslot in the top of the oil pump and provides the force todrive the oil pump.~ ~ ~ ~~ ~Electronic Ignition DistributorThds Mopar Performance Parts electronic ignitiondistributor is the same as the production distributor andcan be used as a replacement. For 360 AMC V-8 engineonlly.P4.529687 Distributor cap and rotor set.1. Ignition AdwinceCentrifugal (mechanical) advance is controlled byengine speed. Flyweights connected to the distributorshaft are thrown outward by centrifugal force. Higherengine rpm throws the weights further out. Calibratedrate springs are used to control this movement. Theoutward motion of the flyweights causes the rotor andtrigger wheel to be advanced on the distributor shaftseveral degrees in the direction of normal rotation. This is referred to as centrifugal ignition advance.
