2.5L POWER TECH IN-LINE 4 (CRANKSHAFT) 35Plastigauge should indicate the same clearance across theentire width of the insert. If clearance varies, it may indicate atapered journal or foreign material trapped behind the insert. If the specified clearance is indicated and there are noabnormal wear patterns, replacement of the bearing inserts isnot necessary. Remove the Plastigauge from the crankshaftjournal and bearing insert. Proceed to Installation. If the clearance exceeds specification, install a pair of 0.025mm (0.00 1") undersize bearing inserts and measure theclearance as described in the previous steps. The clearanceindicated with the 0.025 mm (0.001") undersize insert pairinstalled will determine if this insert size or some othercombination will provide the specified clearance.Example: If the clearance was 0.0762 mm (0.003")originally, a pair of 0.0254 mm (0.001") undersize insertswould reduce the clearance by 0.0254 mm (0.00 1 "). Theclearance would then be 0.05 1 mm (0.002") and within thespecification. A 0.05 I mm (0.002") undersize bearing insertand a 0.0254 mm (0.001 ") undersize insert would reduce theoriginal clearance an additional 0.0127 mm (0.0005") andthe clearance would then be 0.0381 mm (O.OOl5").Caution: Never use a pair of inserts that differ more thanone bearing size as a pair. For example, DO NOT use astandard size upper insert and a 0.051 mm (0.002")undersize lower insert. If the clearance exceeds the specification using a pair of0.05 I mm (0.002") undersize bearing inserts, measure thecrankshaft journal diameter with a micrometer. If thejournal diameter is correct, the crankshaft bore in thecylinder block may be misaligned, which requires cylinderblock replacement or machining to true bore.If the diameter for journals 1 through 5 is less than 63.4517mm (2.4981"), replace the crankshaft or grind the crankshaftdown to accept the appropriate undersize bearing inserts.Once the proper clearances have been obtained, remove thecrankshaft and proceed to Iristullution.COMPRESSED'PLASTIGAGEPLASTIGAGESCALEIFigure 2 - 16J9009-42Main Bearing Journal Diameter - CrankshaftRemovedClean the main bearing journal of oil.Determine the maximum diameter of journal with amicrometer. Measure at two locations 90" apart at each endof the journal. The maximum allowable taper and out of round is 0.01 3 mm(0.0005"). Compare measured diameter with the journaldiameter specification listed in the Main Bearing FittingChart (refer to the proper service manual) and select insertsrequired to obtain the specified bearing-to-journal clearance.Installation1. Lubricate the bearing surface of each insert withengine oil.2.3.4.5.6.7.8.9.Loosen all the main bearing caps. Install the mainbearing upper insert(s).Install the lower bearing inserts into the main bearing caps.Install the main bearing cap(s) and lower insert(s).Clean the rear main bearing cap (No. 5) mating surfaces.Apply Mopar Gasket Maker (or equivalent) to the rearbearing cap (Figure 2-17). The bead should be 3 mm(0.125 in) thick. DO NOT apply Mopar Gasket Maker(or equivalent) to the lip of the seal.Install the rear main bearing cap. DO NOT strike thecap more than twice for proper engagement.Tighten the bolts of caps 1, 3, 4 and 5 to 54 Nom(40 ft-lbs) torque. Now tighten these bolts to 95 Nom(70 ft-lbs) torque. Finally, tighten these bolts to 108Nom (80 ft-lbs) torque.Push the crankshaft forward and backward. Load thecrankshaft front or rear and tighten cap bolt #2 to 54 Nom(40 ft-lbs) torque. Then tighten to 95 Nom (70 ft-lbs)torque, and finally tighten to 108 Nom (80 ft-lbs) torque.
