At the fifth annual Camp Jeep athistoric Oak Ridge Estate in Virginia’s Blue RidgeMountains (Aug. 6-7, 1999), over 7,500 Jeep aficionadosconverged on the spectacular 4,800 acre site for a weekendof education, entertainment and environmental awareness. The itinerary included outdoor adventures as well aslearning to respect and protect the environment. Jeepowners could choose family-friendly activities such asoutdoor concerts, fly fishing and Frisbee golf, or test theircourage with white-water rafting and all-terrain mountainboarding. And of course, what would Camp Jeep bewithout driving and discussing the famous four-wheelers,checking out the Mopar Performance parts available tomaximize the off-road experience, and looking over thenewest ways to dress the icon of off-road jaunts? Plenty ofMopar staffers were on hand to give and receive input abouthow to create the ultimate Jeep to fit every individual’sstyle. On top of the valuable training and exciting“extracurricular” activities, Jeep owners were able toreceive information on the latest Jeep product engineeringand accessories. Owners also had the opportunity to learnmore about their vehicles’ potential through Jeep 101training courses. Jeep 101 was designed to teach Jeepowners the basics of off-road driving and the four-wheeldrivecapabilities of their vehicles. Training began withowners working with experienced guides on trainingcourses, and allowed drivers to “graduate” to solo runs onsurrounding trails which were rated according to difficulty. There was also an opportunity for the youngest of the Jeepcontingent to get involved, with a mini-Jeep 101 trainingcourse designed exclusively for kids.Campers were educated on maintaining the natural beautyof the roads and trails they travel through Tread Lightly!, anon-profit organization funded by major outdoor recreationcompanies and vehicle manufacturers, including Jeep, thatpromotes off-road ethics and responsibility.Camp Jeep participants were also able to visit the on-siteJeep Store, an awesome collection of displays where onecould get fully decked out with all kinds of Jeep accessoriesand sportswear. The large tent housed the latest and greatestin Jeep parts and clothing, and everything could be orderedor purchased on the spot.
