118 MOPAR PERFORMANCE PARTSVALVE SPRING AND OIL DEFLECTORNote: Each valve spring is held in place around the valvestem by a retainer and a set of conical valve locks. The lockscan be removed only by compressing the valve spring.Removal1.2.3.4.5.6.7.8.9.Remove the cylinder head cover. Refer to CylinderHead Cover Reinoval, ‘Cylinder Head’ section ofthis chapter.Remove the capscrews, bridge and pivot assembly, androcker arms for access to each valve spring to beremoved. Alternately loosen each capscrew one turn ata time to avoid damaging the bridge.Remove the pushrods.Note: Retain the pushrods, bridges, pivots and rockerarms in the same order and position as removed.Remove the spark plug(s) adjacent to the cylinder(s)below the valve springs to be removed.Install a 14 mm (1/2”) (thread size) air hose adapter into the spark plug hole.Note: An adapter can be constructed by welding an airhose connection to the body of a spark plug with theporcelain removed.Connect an air hose to the adapter and maintain at least621 kPa (90 psi) of air pressure in the cylinder to holdthe valves against their seats.Note: For vehicles equipped with an air conditioner, usea flexible air adapter when servicing the No. 1 cylinder.Use a valve spring compressor tool to compress thespring and remove the locks.Remove the valve spring and retainer.Remove the valve stem oil deflector.Installation4. Disconnect the air hose. Remove the adapter from thespark plug hole and install the spark plug.5. Repeat the procedure for each remaining valve springto be removed.6. Install the pushrods. Ensure the bottom end of eachpushrod is centered in the plunger cap seat of thehydraulic valve tappet.7. Install the rocker arms, pivots and bridge at theiroriginal location.8. Tighten the bridge capscrews alternately one turn at atime to avoid damaging the bridge.9. Install the cylinder head cover. Refer to Refer toCylinder Head Cover Installation, ‘Cylinder Head’section of this chapter.ROCKER ARM ASSEMBLYRemoval1. Remove the cylinder head cover. Refer to Cylinder HeadCover Removal, ‘Cylinder Head’ section of this chapter.2. Remove the two capscrews at each bridge and pivotassembly. Alternately loosen the capscrews one turn ata time to avoid damaging the bridges.3. Remove the bridges, pivots and corresponding pairs ofrocker arms and place them on the bench in the sameorder as removed.4. Remove the pushrods and place them on the bench inthe same order as removed.Caution: Install the deflector carefully to prevent damagefrom the sharp edges of the valve spring lock groove.1. Use an 11 mm (7/16”) deep socket and small hammerto gently tap the oil deflector onto the valve stem.2. Install the valve spring and retainer.3. Compress the valve spring with valve springcompressor tool and insert the valve locks. Release thespring tension and remove the tool.Note: Tap the spring from side-to-side to ensure thatthe spring is seated properly on the cylinder head.
