304 MOPAR PERFORMANCE PARTSInspection0 Inspect for cracks in combustion chambers and valveports.0000Inspect for cracks on the exhaust seats.Inspect for cracks in the gasket surface at each coolantpassage.Inspect the valves for burned, cracked or warpedheads.Inspect for scuffed or bent valve stems.Replace valves displaying any damage.Valve RefacingI. Use a valve refacing machine to reface the intake andexhaust valves to the specified angle.2.After refacing, a margin of at least 0.787 mm (0.03 1")must remain. If the margin is less than 0.787 mm(0.03 1 'I), the valve must be replaced.Valve Seat Refacing1. Install a pilot of the correct size in the valve guide boreand reface the valve seat to the specified angle with agood dressing stone.2.3.Remove only enough metal to provide a smooth finish.Use tapered stones to obtain the specified seat widthwhen required.4. Control seat runout to a maximum of 0.0635 mm(0.0025"), using a dial indictor.Valve Spring Tension Test(Refer to Valve Spring Tension Test, 'Camshaft and ValveGear' section of the 4.0L engine chapter, for the properprocedure.)Installation - Cylinder Head Removed1.2.3.4.5.6.7.Thoroughly clean the valve stems and the valveguide bores.Lubricate the stem lightly.Install the valve in the original valve guide bore fromwhere it was removed.Install the replacement valve stem oil deflector on thevalve stem. If the oversize valve stems are used, oversize oil deflectors are required.Position the valve spring and retainer on the cylinderhead and compress the valve spring with a valve springcompressor.Install the valve locks and release the tool.Tap the valve spring from side to side with a hammerto ensure that the spring is properly seated on thecylinder head.VALVE STEM OIL DEFLECTORRubber valve stem oil deflectors are installed on each valvestem to prevent the oil used for rocker arm lubrication fromentering the combustion chamber through the valve guides. The oil deflectors should be replaced whenever valve serviceis performed or if the rubber has become hard and brittle. The valve spring is held in place on the valve stem by aretainer and a set of valve locks. The locks can be removedonly by compressing the valve spring. Whenever valvesprings are removed, they should be tested for correcttension and replaced if not within specifications.ReplacementNylon valve stem oil deflectors are installed on each valvestem to prevent lubricating oil from entering thecombustion chamber through the valve guide bores.Caution: Ensure that the valve stem is free of burrs or sharpedges before replacing the oil deflectors.Replace the oil deflectors whenever valve service isperformed or if the oil deflectors have deteriorated.Oil deflector replacement requires removal of the valvesprings. Refer to Valve and Valve Spring Removal - CylinderHead Removed, in this section, for the removal procedure...l- - i 7
