4.2L IN-LINE 6 IlNDUCTlON SYSTEM) 313as the engine operating conditions indicate that the closedloop mode of operation is appropriate. At this time, theMCU shifts the operation to closed loop. Based upon theoxygen content in the exhaust gas and other inputs, itcontinues to operate the system in the closed loop mode andconstantly vanes the aidfuel ratio to maintain an optimum14.7: 1 ratio. As the engine operating conditions are constantlymonitored by the MCU, any change in condition such as theengine being placed in wide open throttle, is quicklydetected by the MCU. The MCU then places the systemback into the appropriate open loop mode of operation.JEEP 4.2L MULTIPOINT FUEL INJECTIONCONVERSION KIT INSTALLATIONINSTRUCTIONS~~Jeep 4.2L MPI Conversion KitThe Mopar Performance Parts 4.2L electronic fuelinjection kit is designed to make your 1981-90 Jeep moreefficient and powerful. The kit replaces the stockcarburetor, intake manifold, and other major componentswith multi-point fuel injection (MPI). Each cylinder hasits own injector that is activated sequentially with thefiring order to precisely control individual fuelrequirements. The MPI kit is self-compensating and runsequally well from sea level to terrain above 12,000 feet.Mechanical components are based from production 1995Jeep parts. Emissions exempt in CA under CARB E.O.D265-14.Note: Use of these MPI packages requires either damperkit P5249687 or P5249688.P52496 IOP52496 10198 1-90 manual transmission, CJ andYJ models.1981-90 automatic transmission, CJ andYJ models.Note 1: This product is intended for use on stock, unmodified, well maintained 1981-90 4.2L (258 CID)engines. Installation on engines with modified camshafts, increased compression ratio, or engines that are in poormechanical condition (such as low cranking compression orexcessive oil consumption) is NOT recommended.Note 2: This kit is emissions exempt in the State ofCalifornia under C.A.R.B. Executive Order D265-7. Thetune-up procedures and engine service are the same as a1994-95 4.0L Jeep Wrangler.Note 3: Please read these instructions thoroughly prior toinstallation of this kit. Check your parts against the bill ofmaterial included in the kit.Note 4: If spark knock (detonation) occurs, it isrecommended that 92 octane or better premium fuel be used. The use of Mopar combustion chamber cleaner will reducecarbon deposits and help reduce spark knock.Note 5: This is a universal kit. Some part(s) in this lut maynot be used in every installation.Note 6: Keep all parts removed from the engine untilinstallation is complete. You may need them later.Disassembly1.2.3.4.5.6.Disconnect the ground cable from the battery and drainthe coolant from the radiator.Loosen the power steering pump and the alternator andremove the drive belts. Remove the two bolts that holdthe power steering pump to the water pump. Removethe two nuts from the rear power steering pump bracket(DO NOT throw this bracket away-you will need tomodify and re-install later), then slide the pumpforward to disengage it from the rear bracket. Removethe rear bracket from the intake manifold.Remove the air cleaner assembly as a unit and discard it.Remove all of the production emissions controls fromthe engine, including the three (3) solenoids located ontop of the valve cover, the vacuum switch assemblyand any lines and delay valves connected to thecarburetor. All the wiring that goes to all the emissioncontrols including the wires connected to the oldcarburetor can be completely removed. You can alsoremove the small computer that controls the carburetor.Note 1: CJ models have the carburetor computermounted behind the glove box. If you want to removethe computer by taking it out the glove box, you can. Ifyou do not remove the computer, it will not hurtanything. Just be sure to cut the wires going throughthe firewall, push the wires in toward the computer andseal up the hole (silicone/RTV works great).Note 2: Refer to the Production Emissions Schematicor the proper service manual for your particular yearvehicle.Remove the pulse air valves, which inject fresh airupstream and downstream of the catalytic converter, and all associated fittings.Disconnect the heater hose from the fitting on theintake manifold. Remove the throttle linkage andthrottle cable. Remove the carburetodintake manifoldassembly. This will require removing the tube thatconnects the exhaust manifold to the EGR valvemounted on the intake manifold. DO NOT throw thisEGR tube away - you will need later at installation.Note: It is not necessary to remove the exhaustmanifold.
