~46 MOPAR PERFORMANCE PARTSc. The coating material is applied to the piston afterthe final piston machining process. Measuring theoutside diameter of a coated piston will notprovide accurate results. Therefore measuring theinside diameter of the cylinder bore with a dialbore gauge is MANDATORY. To correctly selectthe proper size piston, a cylinder bore gaugecapable of reading in 0.003 mm (.0001")increments is required.d.Piston installation into the cylinder bore requiresslightly more pressure than that required for noncoatedpistons. The bonded coating on the pistonwill give the appearance of a line-to-line fit withthe cylinder bore.ABORE GAUGEFigure 2 - 342. Refer to Cylinder HeadRemoval, 'Cylinder Head' section of this chapter forthe procedure.Position the pistons one at a time near the bottom of thestroke and use a ridge reamer to remove the ridge fromthe top end of the cylinder walls. Use a protective clothto collect the cuttings.Raise the vehicle.Drain the engine oil.Remove the oil pan, gaskets and seals. Refer to Oil Pun,'Oiling System' section of this chapter for the procedure.Remove the connecting rod bearing caps and insertsand retain in the same order as removed to facilitateinstallation in the original locations. The connectingrods and caps are stamped with the correspondingcylinder number (Figure 2-35).Lower vehicle until it is about two (2) feet from the floor.Have an assistant push the piston and connecting rodassemblies up and through the top of the cylinder bores(Figure 2-36).Caution: Ensure that the connecting rod bolts don'tscratch the crankshaft journals or cylinder walls. Shortpieces of rubber hose slipped over the rod bolts willprevent damage to the cylinder bores and crankshaftjournals.
