262 MOPAR PERFORMANCE PARTSd. Check the pushrod-to-block clearance with highlift camshafts or large diameter pushrods.4.5.Additional clearance can be obtained by using asmall electric or air grinder, a drill motor with arotary file, or a rat-tail file. Grind to yourindividual need.Pushrod LengthTo optimize rocker arm geometry, a cut-to-lengthpushrod kit is recommended, but only to the veryserious racer or for engines with large amounts of headmilling and block decking. Custom length pushrods areused to obtain ideal rocker arm geometry which allowsthe best performance from a given camshaft. For additional information, refer to Pushrods,‘Camshaft and Valve Gear’ section of this chapter.Additional Camshaft Installation Performance TipsWhen installing a new camshaft, there are several itemsbesides the camshaft that should be replaced. First, you’re probably going to replace the valve springs toget the most out of the new camshaft. It’s always a goodidea at this point to install new valve seals. While the camshaft is out, it’s recommended that thestandard silent chain be replaced with a roller timingchain and sprocket set. Refer to ‘Crankshaft’ section ofthis chapter for more information. The 4.0L engine needs offset bushings to centerlinecamshafts (P3 6909 3 6).When centerlining the camshaft, we recommend usinga degree wheel. Once the engine is put back together, you should use damper degree timing tape (P4529070).Refer to ‘Camshaft and Valve Gear’ section of thischapter for complete camshaft centerlining information.Notes Before Final Assembly3. Rocker Arms and Pushrodsa. Check rocker arm-to-valve tip relationship foralignment. Improper alignment can place undueside loads on valves, causing rapid valve guidewear. Rocker shaft spacers or grinding the rockercan be used to move the rocker arm up or down theshaft to align it on the valve tip.b.c.Check valve tips for scuffing or high wear.Check pushrods for straightness and length. If theyare too short, they can’t be adjusted to workproperly. If they are too long, they will over-anglethe rocker arm and, with high lift camshafts, hitthe bottom of the rocker.1. Make sure all parts have been cleaned, and are kept asclean as possible.2.3.Observe factory torque specifications for all fasteners, and also factory specified tightening sequences forcylinder head and intake manifold bolts to reduce thepossibility of cylinder head or intake manifold warpage. The engine should be assembled using oil, gasketsealer, white grease, etc., on the appropriate points.FINAL ASSEMBLYNow that we’ve gathered all our parts, the next step is toclean everything, especially the used parts that are going tobe reused. Clean them before they go to the machine shop, unless you’re going to pay extra to “tank” them. A machineshop will do a better job with clean parts than with greasyparts. You don’t have to polish them-just degrease them...
