474 MOPAR PERFORMANCE PARTSWheel LossIt sounds incredibly simple, but check those lug nuts everytime before going out onto the track! You wouldn’t think ofit unless you were a seasoned racer, but wheel loss i s one ofthe most common causes of accidents in racing, not tomention one of the most serious things that could go wrongwith your vehicle. If you haven’t checked them yourselfand you plan on getting behind the wheel, grab a lugwrench and make sure they’re tight! After all, it’s your lifethat’s on the line.Brakes and Brake LinesBrake lines must be routed outside the frame longitudinalsin the bellhousing area, and any holes left in the firewallshould be sealed, not left open. Brake lines should alwaysbe shielded whenever possible.ENGINE AND DRIVETRAIN SAFETYFuel FiltersWarning! Only metal fuel filters should be used on anyrace vehicle. Glass or plastic filters should NEVER be used.In an accident, glass can break, causing a major fuel leak. And in the case of an engine fire, plastic can melt, causingthe same problem. This is very important to rememberbecause any fuel leak under the hood leaks directly onto theengine, almost always causing a severe engine fire.Electric Fuel PumpsIn oval track racing, electric fuel pumps are not legal due totheir extreme danger. If there is a break in the fuel line or arupturedhroken fuel filter, the electric pump will cause thefuel to keep pumping out and when the fuel touchessomething hot - FIRE! Therefore, even if legal, electric fuelpumps ARE NOT recommended for oval track cars.Insl.ead, consider a high volume mechanical fuel pump.Mopar Performance Parts does recommend electric fuelpumps for drag racing. For more information and specificrecommendations, refer to the ‘Fuel Delivery’ section ofChapter 4, 4.0L Power Tech In-line 6.Stuck ThrottlesRacers don’t necessarily think of the engine as a safetyitern. Safety is thought of being seat belts, helmets, rollcages, maybe even fuel systems and brakes, but nobodyever thinks of the engine as a safety item. But if yourthrottle sticks, you are in deep trouble. So you need tocheck the throttle for easy action, worn cables, etc., so thisdoesn’t happen. You also need to use two throttle springs. If you only haveone spring and it breaks or falls off, your throttle is going tostick. If you have two springs, you have twice the chance ofavoiding this. Most newer vehicles have a dual throttlespring-a large thick one with a smaller one inside. This isnot done for spring load, but so that in case one breaks youwill have a back-up.Note: The most common stuck throttle problem is throughinterference, typically with the air cleaner (most of whichare usually homemade). Most racers make the mistake ofchecking interference with the hood up, then when they testdrive the vehicle, they drive off the end of the track. Soremember - check ,for throttle cable interference with thehood down as well as with the hood up...1- - 7 7
