~~~394 MOPAR PERFORMANCE PARTSIntroductionCylinderHeadsCleaning and InspectionThe 360 AMC V-8 uses two cast iron cylinder heads (rightand left banks) with combustion chamber volumes of58.62-61.62 cc (3.58-3.76 cu. in.) each. In(ake and cxhau\tvalve lengths are 12 I .hS3- 122.034 mm (4.7805-4.8045").For more cylinder head specifications, refer to 360 AMCV-8 Engine SpecIfkcilion.~, 'Engine Assembly' section ofthis chapter.Cylinder Head Gasket SetThis heavy duty head gasket set ciin be used ;I\replacement. Factory approved and cngineered l'orperformance applications. For 360 AMC V-8 onlyP4.529630 Cylinder hcad gasket \et.RemovalThe following procedure can be performed with the enginein or out of the vehicle.1.2.3.4.5.6.Disconnect the battery negative cable.Drain the cooling system and cylinder block. If thecoolant is reusable, drain it into ;I clean container.Remove the ignition uircs and spark plugs.Remove the cylinder head cover and gasket.Remove the capscrews, bridge and pivot assembliesand rocker arms. Alternatcly loosen the capscrews. oneturn at a time, to avoid damaging the bridge.Remove the pushrods. Retain thc rocker iirnis, bridges,pivots and pushrods in the same order a\ rc~noved tofacilitate installation in the original locations.7. Remove the intake manilold.8. Disconnect the exhaust manifold from the hcad. It isnot necessary to remove the exhaust do\vn pipe I'romthe manifold.9. Loosen all drive belts.10. On the right side, remo\.c the A/C compressormounting bracket and battei-y negative cable from thecylinder head.11. On the right side. disconnect the alternator supportbrace from the cylinder head.12. On the left side, disconnect the ail pump and powersteering mount bracket from the cylinder head.13. Remove the cylinder head retaining bolts.14. Remove the cylinder head and gasket.Thoroughly clean the gasket surfaccs of the cylinder headand block to remove all foreign material and gasket cement.Remove carbon deposits from the combustion chambersand the top of each piston.Use a straightedge and feeler gauge to determine thetlatncss of the cylinder head and block mating surfaces.Refer to 360 AMC V-K Engine Specifications, 'EngineAssembly' section of this chapter, for the proper tolerances.If the cylinder hcad is to be replaced and the original valvesreused. remove the valves and measure the stem diameters.Service replacement heads have standard-size valve guidebores. If valves with oversire stems from the original headarc: to be installed in a replacement head, ream the valveguide bores to the appropriate oversize diameter.If the original valvcs are used, remove all carbon depositsan'd rcface the valves. Install the valves in the cylinder headus] ng rcplacement valve stem oil deflectors. If valves withoversiie stems are used, oversize deflectors are alsorequircd. Transfer all the components from the originalhe,d chat are not included with the replacement head.Wire brush the threads of the cylinder head bolts prior toinstallation. Unclean threads will affect the tightening torque.Blow coolant from the bolt holes to prevent trapping coolant.InstallationI.2.3.4.5.Apply an even coat of non-hardening sealingcompound to both sides of the replacement headgasket.Caution: DO NOT apply sealing compound to thehead and block surfaces. DO NOT allow sealer to enterthe cylinder bores.Position the gasket tlush on the block with the stampedword TOP facing up.Install the cylinder head over the zasket.Tighten the cylinder head bolts evenly with 108 Nom(80 ft-lbs) torque following the tightening sequence(Figure 7- 19). Then repeat the sequence and tighten thebolts to I40 Nom ( I IO ft-lbs) torque.Note: The 360 AMC V-8 engine uses an aluminumcoated, laminated steel and asbestos gasket. Retighteninghead bolts after the engine has been run isnot necessary.On the left side, connect the air pump mountingbracket and power steering pump (if removed) to thecylinder head.. ..- -7'1
