T ' 7 7116 MOPAR PERFORMANCE PARTSCAMSHAFTCamshaft and Valve GearInstallationThe 2.46L engine uses a cast iron camshaft with intake andexhaust cam lobe lifts of .254", and durations of (intake) 259",(exhaust-Nationwide) 259", and (exhaust-California) 289".Valve lengths are (for intake and exhaust) 4.7895-4.8045".For more camshaft specifications, refer to 2.461; EngineSpecifications, 'Engine Assembly' section of this chapter.RemovalWarning! The coolant in a recently operated engine is hotand pressurized. Release the pressure before removing thedraincock, cap and drain plugs.1.2.3.4.5.6.7.8.9.10. Remove the crankshaft and oil slinger.11.12. Rotate the crankshaft until the zero degree (OO) timingmark on the crankshaft sprocket is closest to and on thecenterline with the timing mark on the camshaft sprocket.13.14.Drain the cooling system.Note: DO NOT waste reusable coolant. Drain thecoolant into a clean container.Remove the radiator.Remove the drive belt(s).Remove the distributor and ignition wires.Remove the cylinder head cover. Refer to Cylinder HeadCover Removal, 'Cylinder Head' section of this chapter.Remove the capscrews, bridge and pivot assemblies,and rocker arms. Alternately loosen each capscrew oneturn at a time to avoid damaging the bridges.Remove the pushrods.Note: Position all components on a workbench in thesame order as removed to facilitate installation in theoriginal positions.Remove the tappets using hydraulic valve tappetremover. Refer to Hydraulic Valve Tappet Removal, inthis section, for the procedure.Remove the pulley (if applicable), vibration damperand timing case cover. Refer to Timing Case CoverRemoval, 'Crankshaft' section of this chapter.Remove the camshaft sprocket retaining bolt.Remove the timing chain and sprockets as an assembly.Remove the camshaft.Note: The camshaft MUST be centerlined to ensure properinstallation. Refer to the 'Camshaft and Valve Gear' sectionof Chapter 2 for complete details.1. Lubricate the camshaft with Mopar Engine OilSupplement, or equivalent.2.Install the camshaft carefully to prevent damaging thecamshaft bearings.3. Turn the tensioner lever to the unlocked (down)position (Figure 2-25).4.Pull the tensioner block toward the tensioner lever tocompress the spring. Hold the block and turn thetensioner lever to the locked (up) position (Figure 2-25).5. Install the timing chain, crankshaft sprocket andcamshaft sprocket with the timing marks aligned(Figure 2-26).6.7.8.9.Note: To verify correct installation of the timingchain, turn the crankshaft to position the camshaftsprocket timing mark at approximately the one o'clockposition (Figure 2-26). This positions the crankshaftsprocket timing mark where the adjacent tooth mesheswith the chain at the three o'clock position. Count thenumber of chain pins between the timing marks onboth sprockets. There must be 20 pins.Install the camshaft sprocket retaining bolt and tightenwith 108 N*m (80 ft-lbs) torque.Install the crankshaft oil slinger.Release the timing chain tensioner by turning thetensioner lever to the unlocked (down) position.Install the timing case cover and a replacement oil seal.Refer to Timing Case Cover Installation, 'Crankshaft'section of this chapter.101. With the key inserted in the keyway on the crankshaft,install the vibration damper, washer and bolt.11. Lubricate and tighten the damper bolt with 108 N*m(80 ft-lbs) torque.Note: If the crankshaft turns before the damper bolttightening torque value is attained, the crankshaft canbe prevented from turning by placing two 5/16 x 1 - 1/2"bolts into the damper pullet holes and wedging a barbetween them. Rotate the bar until it contacts the framemember to prevent the crankshaft from turning.12. Install the damper pulley.
