202 MOPAR PERFORMANCE PARTSInstallation1. Install the pushrods in their original locations. Ensurethat the bottom end of each pushrod is centered in thetappet plunger cap seat.2.3.4.5.Install the rocker arms, pivots and bridge above eachcylinder from where they were originally removed.Loosely install the capscrews through each bridge. At each bridge, tighten the capscrews alternately oneturn at a time to avoid damaging the bridge. Tightenthe capscrews to 28.5 Nom (21 ft-lbs) torque.Install the cylinder head cover. Refer to Cylinder HeadCover Instullation, ‘Cylinder Head’ section of thischapter, for the procedure.PUSHRODSRemoval1. Remove the cylinder head cover. Refer to CylinderHead Cover Removal, ‘Cylinder Head’ section of thischapter, for the procedure.2.3.4.Remove the two capscrews at each bridge and pivotassembly (Figure 2-62). Alternately loosen the capscrewsone turn at a time to avoid damaging the bridges.Remove the bridges, pivots and corresponding pairs ofrocker arms and place them on a bench in the sameorder as removed (Figure 2-62).Remove the pushrods and place them on a bench in thesame order as removed (Figure 2-62).Cleaning and InspectionClean all the components with cleaning solvent and usecompressed air to blow out the oil passages in the rockerarms and pushrods.Inspect the pivot surface area of each rocker arm. Replaceany that are scuffed, pitted or excessively worn.Inspect the valve stem tip contact surface of each rockerarm and replace any rocker arm that is deeply pitted.Inspect each pushrod end for excessive wear and replace asrequired. If any pushrod is excessively worn because oflack of oil, replace the pushrod and inspect thecorresponding hydraulic tappet.A wear pattern along the length of the pushrod is notnormal. Inspect the cylinder head for obstruction if thiscondition exists.Length, strength, and weight are the most critical items forpushrods, especially the first two. Length affects geometryand valve gear oiling. Strength keeps deflections minimizedand weight helps engine speed, but a weight loss that causesa sfrength loss will result in a performance loss. The valve train of the Jeep 4.0L engine is oiled through thepushrods. Jeep engine pushrods (all Jeep engines) are hollowso fhat oil can pass through them to oil the valve train.Warning! Because Jeep engine valve trains are oiled viahollow pushrods, solid shaft pushrods cannot be used.Standard Length PushrodThis is a fully assembled, stock diameter hydraulicpushrod. It is hollow to provide valve train oiling (same asproduction pushrod). Factory approved and engineered forrebuild or repairs. For 1987-2000, 4.0L and all 2.5Lengines. (Sold individually.)P45292 19Standard length pushrod.Standard Length Pushrod SetThese are fully assembled, stock diameter pushrods.
