430 MOPAR PERFORMANCE PARTSIgnition SwitchThe ignition switch is mounted on the lower section of thesteering column and is connected to the key lock assemblyby a remote lock rod.In race vehicles, the production ignition switch issometimes replaced by a toggle switch. This can causeproblems if a high-amp rated switch (I 8-20 amp) isn’t used. Most readily available switches are 14-16 amp rated. Thelower rating causes more resistance in the ignition circuit, which cuts down on the voltage available to the ignition’scontrol unit. The lower voltage can cause the ignitionsystem to perform poorly or develop a miss which can bevery difficult to analyze. There are 2 special switches that are helpful in wiring a racevehicle: “On-Off’ Micro Switch Assembly (P3690282);and, Push Button Starter Switch Assembly (P3690823).The “On-Off’ Micro Switch Assembly is the mostimportant. Other “econo” switches aren’t rated as high onamperage and therefore put resistance between the batteryand the ignition and can cause misfiring.Ignition SwitchesP3690282P3690823Ignition Wires“On-Off’ micro switch assembly (20 amp).Push button starter switch assembly. If you don’t have top quality ignition wires you aren’tconducting maximum spark.Production spark plug wire is 7 mm. For racing purposeswe recommend an 8 mm, 19-strand, copper, siliconejacketedwire. The added insulation of the larger diameterwire helps control today’s high energy ignition systems.Nine millimeter plug wires are not recommended becauseof the mismatch of the terminals in coils and caps. If moreinsulation is required, neoprene hose of the proper insidediameter is recommended.Usually, once the wire is installed, pulling on the wire toremove the boot from the plug is the most common causeof failure. This is especially true of stock or cheap wires.Using the Mopar Performance Parts Plug Wire Boot Puller(P5249718) will help plug wire removal without damagingthe connector. The boot puller will probably double plugwire life, malung it one of the best deals in the ignition area. The Mopar Performance Parts plug wires have straight endsat the spark plug, which is the most common style. Havingbeen in racing for many years, we know that the straightend is not best for all applications, especially with headers. In an effort to solve this problem, we have introduced VariAngle Plug Adapters (P4286742), which adjust easily fromstraight to right angles. Our Ignition Wire Separator Package (P4007667) keeps thewires separated from the cap to the plug. This helpsperformance by preventing cross firing and makes theengine compartment look much more organized.Spark Plug Wire Boot PullerHere’s the tool you need for easy removal of spark plugwires without pulling the wire out of the terminal end andboot. Saves on knuckles, too.P5 249718Spark plug wire boot puller.Vari-Angle Plug AdaptersHere’s a convenient way to steer spark plug wires aroundheaders, brackets, and other tight areas, in any directionyou want. Vari-angle plug adapters have a built-in swiveldevice which maintains the position you bend them in. Ahandy set-up for any racer. Sold two per set.P4286742 Vari-angle plug adapters.Ignition Wire Separator SetIgnition wire separators. 8 pieces per set.P4.007667 Ignition wire separator set.Ignition Coil ConnectorThe ignition coil terminals and connector are of uniquedesign. The connector is removed from the coil by graspingboth sides and pulling away from the coil. When a tachometer is required for engine testing or tuneup, connect it using an alligator jaw type connector.Resistance WireA wire with 1.35 ohms resistance is provided in the ignitionwiring to supply less than full battery voltage to the ignitioncoil after the starter motor solenoid is de energized. Duringengine starting, the resistance wire is bypassed and fullbattery voltage is applied to the ignition coil. The bypass isaccomplished at the I-terminal on the starter motor solenoid.
