T468 MOPAR PERFORMANCE PARTSMost engine inspections are based on numbers; forexample, bore, stroke, head casting number, orcarburetor part number. Be sure that the parts youare using agree with what the governing body saysthey should be. If you get a specific concession froma governing body official, try to get it in writing toavoid future problems, questions, or rejections fromother officials. For best results, have yourpaperwork up-to-date before the race and be sure toalways have it with you.CONTINGENCYThere is a difference between professional racing andamateur racing. Many amateur racers are not sponsored. They may or may not use contingency money. Mostprofessionals are sponsored, but they still use contingencymoney! Not all manufacturers post contingency money. What is contingency money? Very simply, it’s money paidby a manufacturer to a racer for winning and running themanufacturer’s decal. At an NHRA national event such asthe Mopar Mile-High Nationals, there may be as many as100 contingency postings. Postings can range from “oil” to“vehicle body.” At a local NHRA or IHRA event, thesepostings tend to drop to 50 or less (approximately).Compare this to a local circle track which may have onlyfive or 10 contingency postings. (This also varies bycategory - faster classes tend to have mpre postings.)How do you find out what is posted? At the local level, thetrack will usually print a sheet with all the contingencypostings on it. At a bigger race, the sanctioning body wouldpublish the posting. For the NHRA, these are publishedbefore each national event in National DRAGSTER. For theIHRA, refer to DRAG Review. Almost all types ofmotorsports have contingency sponsors, but the NHRA andIHRA programs are probably the largest and most wellorganizedfor the amateur! Now that you know what contingency is and how to findwhere it is posted, how do you get the money? First, youmust put the sponsor’s decal on your race vehicle. Mostcontingency programs are left to the racer to apply. At alarger event, the sanctioning body will handle some of this, but you have to fill out an information sheet and they willchleck for decals and product. (Many manufacturers ask thesanctioning bodies to check the race vehicle to verify it hasthe product claimed by the decal.)Contingency programs tend to be very specific. A postingcan be for only one event or for only one product. Forexample, Edelbrock may post for intake manifolds, but notall of the other products that they make. Goodyear may postfor the championship, but not all the local events that leadup to it.At the local level, contingency postings are more likely tobe product, not money. For example, you can win a case ofoil. This is helpful because you are going to need it to race!Another form of sponsorship is sometimes called a “partsdeal.” This usually means you get free parts to maintainyour vehicle. The hard part of contingency programs is the OEM aspect. The vehicle and/or engine must be a certain brand. There arebasically three OEMs - DaimlerChrysler, Ford, and GM.(Even a dragster or sprint car has some brand of engine.)
