2.46L IN-LINE 4 (CAMSHAFT AND VALVE GEAR) 11 9Cleaning and Inspection1. Clean all the components with cleaning solvent and usecompressed air to blow out the oil passages in therocker arms and pushrods.2.3.4.5.Inspect the pivot surface area of each rocker arm.Replace any that are scuffed, pitted or excessively worn.Inspect the valve stem tip contact surface of each rockerarm and replace any rocker arm that is deeply pitted.Inspect each pushrod end for excessive wear andreplace as required. If any pushrod is excessively wornbecause of lack of oil, replace it and inspect thecorresponding hydraulic tappet for excessive wear.A wear pattern along the length of the pushrod is notnormal. Inspect the cylinder head for obstruction if thiscondition exists.Installation1. Install the pushrods in their original locations. Ensurethat the bottom of each pushrod is centered in thetappet plunger cap seat.2.3.4.5.Install the rocker arms, pivots and bridge above eachcylinder from where they were originally removed.Loosely install the capscrews through each bridge.At each bridge, tighten the capscrews alternately oneturn at a time to avoid damaging the bridge. Tightenwith 26 Nam (19 ft-lbs) torque.Install the cylinder head cover. Refer to CylinderHead Cover Installation, ‘Cylinder Head’ section ofthis chapter.4. Remove the tappets through the pushrod openings inthe cylinder head with a hydraulic valve tappetremoval and installation tool.5.Retain the tappets in the same order as removed tofacilitate installation in the original locations.Note: It is not necessary to charge the tappet assemblieswith engine oil. They will charge themselves within avery short period of engine operation.Installation1.2.3.4.5.6.7.Coat each tappet assembly with Mopar Engine OilSupplement (EOS), or equivalent.Use a hydraulic valve tappet removal and installationtool to install each tappet in the same bore from whereit was originally removed.Install the pushrods in their original locations.Install the rocker arms and bridge and pivot assembliesat their original locations. Loosely install thecapscrews at each bridge.Tighten the capscrews alternately one turn at a time toavoid damaging the bridges.Pour the remaining EOS over the entire valveactuating assembly.Note: The EOS must remain with the engine oil for atleast 1,609 km (1,000 miles), but need not be draineduntil the next scheduled oil change.Install the cylinder head cover. Refer to CylinderHead Cover Installation, ‘Cylinder Head’ section ofthis chapter.HYDRAULIC VALVE TAPPETS (LIFTERS)Removal1. Remove the cylinder head cover. Refer to Cylinder HeadCover Removul, ‘Cylinder Head’ section of this chapter.2.Remove the bridge and pivot assemblies and rockerarms by removing the two capscrews at each bridge.Alternately loosen each capscrew one turn at a time toavoid damaging the bridge.3. Remove the pushrods.Note: Retain all the components in the same order asremoved to facilitate installation in the originalposition. Tappets must be re-installed on the same lobeor they will wear out.T
