198 MOPAR PERFORMANCE PARTS6. Connect an air hose to the adapter and apply airpressure slowly. Maintain at least 621 kPa (90 psi) ofair pressure in the cylinder to hold the valves againsttheir seats. For vehicles equipped with an airconditioner, use a flexible air adapter when servicingthe No. 1 cylinder.7.8.9.Tap the retainer or tip with a rawhide hammer to loosenthe lock from the retainer. Use a valve springcompressor tool to compress the spring and remove thelocks (Figure 4-35).Remove valve spring and retainer (Figure 4-34).Remove valve stem oil seals (Figure 4-34). Note thevalve seals are different for intake and exhaust valves. The top of each seal is marked either INT (intake) orEXH (exhaust). DO NOT mix the seals.10. Remove the valves and place them in a rack in theorder in which they are removed.IEXHAUSTVALVEFigure 4 - 341 RETAINERVALVE STEMOIL SEALINTAKEVALVE80bT104bCleaningFigure 4 - 3559009-581. Clean all carbon deposits from the combustionchambers, valve ports, valve stems, valve stem guides, and cylinder head.2.3.Clean all grime and gasket cement from the cylinderhead machined gasket surface.Inspect for cracks in combustion chambers and valve ports.Inspection1.Inspect for cracks on the exhaust seats.2. Inspect for cracks in the gasket surface at eachcoolant passage.3.4.5.Inspect the valve for burned, cracked or warped heads.Inspect for scuffed or bent valve stems.Replace valves displaying any damage.Valve ClearancesProper valve clearances in a race engine are very importantto prevent bent or broken valves. The valve-to-valve clearance should be checked first. This is done with both valves on the seat. This isimportant in all engines.Piston-to-valve clearance is equally important. Thepiston-to-valve clearance is usually measured byplacing modeling clay on the piston and manuallyturning the engine over with the head bolted on andcamshaft, lifters, pushrods, etc., adjusted to zero lash. The clearance between the valve and the block isusually only considered when installing oversizevalves. In some cases, a notch in the side of thecylinder bore below the valve is required.I- --ll iT
