360 AMC V-8 (CAMSHAFT AND VALVE GEAR) 401CleaningRemove all carbon deposits from the combustion chambers,valve ports, valve stems and heads.Remove all foreign material and gasket cement from thecylinder head gasket mating surface.InspectionInspect for cracks in the combustion chambers and valveports and in the gasket surface area at each coolant passage.Inspect for cracks on the exhaust seats.Inspect for burned or cracked valve heads and scuffed valvestems. Replace any valve that is bent, warped or scuffed.Installation -Cylinder Head Removed1.2.3.4.5.Thoroughly clean the valve stems and valve guide bores.Lightly lubricate the stem and install the valve in the samevalve guide bore from where it was originally removed.Install the replacement valve stem oil deflector on thevalve stem.Position the valve spring and retainer on the cylinderhead and compress the valve spring with the compressortool. Install the valve locks and release the tool.Tap the valve spring from side to side with a lighthammer to seat the spring properly on the cylinder head.VALVE STEM OIL DEFLECTORNylon valve stem oil deflectors are installed on each valvestem to prevent lubricating oil from entering thecombustion chamber through the valve guide bores.Caution: Ensure that the valve stem is free of burrs orsharp edges before replacing the oil deflectors.Replace the oil deflectors whenever valve service isperformed or if the oil deflectors have deteriorated.Oil deflector replacement requires removal of the valve springs.Viton Valve Stem Oil Seal SetViton heavy duty umbrella seals are specially designed towithstand high temperatures. Remove the valve locks (Figure 7-23).11.Remove the cylinder head cover.Remove the bridge and pivot assemblies and the rockerarms from the valves requiring valve spring or oildeflector removal.Remove the two capscrews at each bridge. Alternatelyloosen the capscrews one turn at a time to avoiddamaging the bridge.Remove the bridge, pivot and rocker arms.Remove the pushrods. Retain the rocker arms, bridge andpivot assemblies and pushrods in the same order asremoved to facilitate installation at their original locations.Remove the spark plug from the cylinder that requiresvalve spring or oil deflector removal.Install a 14 mm (thread size) air adapter in the sparkplug hole. An adapter can be constructed by welding anair hose connection to the body of a spark plug that hasthe porcelain removed.Connect the air hose to the adapter and maintain atleast 620 kPa (90 psi) pressure in the cylinder to holdthe valves against their seats.Use a valve spring removal/installation tool tocompress the valve spring (Figure 7-22).Remove the valve spring and retainer from the cylinderhead (Figure 7-23).12.
