230 MOPAR PERFORMANCE PARTSPropaneEither a gas or a liquid, propane is used in some fleetvehicles that operate within large cities. Typicallyrequires a special tank and throttle body to convert astandard vehicle.NitromethaneGenerally considered a nitrate in the same family asnitroglycerin. It has nitrogen and oxygen added to thebase carbon and hydrogen compound. Because it hasits own oxygen in the compound, it is a “super fuel”since it can give up the oxygen in the combustionprocess and drastically increase an engine’s output.Nitromethane is used in NHRA Top Fuel and FunnyCar racing. It is generally not legal to use outside ofdrag racing.HydrazineA nitrogen and hydrogen compound commonly called“rocket fuel.” Very dangerous! Was used in NHRA TopFuel racing in the late 1960s and early 1970s. Has sincebeen banned for automotive use.TolueneA hydrocarbon generally used as an additive togasoline. Tends to reduce engine “knocking” byincreasing the fuel’s octane rating or number.Propylene OxideAnother gasoline additive; usually used in smallamounts. Just as with Nitromethane, it carries its ownoxygen which will make gasoline burn like a “superfuel.” Used to increase horsepower.FUEL ECONOMYThe first “energy crisis” occurred in late 1973 through 1974with subsequent gasoline shortages. This resulted in, for thefirst time, serious considerations being given to fueleconomy by the American car-buying public. The 1973-74crisis started Americans thinking about fuel economy, but itdidn’t convince buyers that they needed to double their fueleconomy or purchase 30 to 40 mpg small cars. 1979 wasthe year of giant gas lines, closed gas stations, odd-evenrationing, and minimum-or-maximum sales limits. The“energy crisis” of 1979 resulted not only in shortages, butgreatly increased prices as well. In 1978 a gallon could bepurchased for 50-60 cents, which most people already feltwas too high. In 1979 the price went past $1.00 per gallonquickly, and on up to $1.30 per gallon or higher. (For thelast several years prices have stabilized, but they couldshoot up again at any time.) These two aspects of the 1979crisis made fuel economy the number one buyer interest. This was a new area for the American buyer that neverthought about fuel economy before. Some buyers fell backon 10-20 year old information that foreign cars had the bestfuel economy. American companies countered withcomparison ads showing better fuel economy for Americancars. The fuel economy contest was on and shows no signsof letting up.To this end, we have prepared the following tune-up tipswhich will help you optimize the fuel economy of yourDaimlerChrysler vehicle. Keep in mind that a good tune-upand constant maintenance are the best choices for good fueleconomy. All the “trick” gadgets that the market now has tooffer together are worthless on a poorly tuned andmaintained vehicle.
