41 2 MOPAR PERFORMANCE PARTSIIf the gear end clearance is excessive, install athinner gasket. If the gear end clearance is stillexcessive, replace the gears and idler shaft.STMI?- ITEDGEInstallation1. Install the oil pressure relief valve in the pump coverwith the spring and retaining cap (Figure 7-36).2.3.Install the idler shaft, idler gear and drive gearassembly (Figure 7-37).Note: To ensure self-priming of the oil pump, fill thepump with petroleum jelly prior to the installation ofthe oil pump cover. DO NOT use grease of any type.Install the pump cover and oil filter assembly with areplacement gasket. Tighten the retaining bolts to 6Nom (55 in-lbs) torque.Oil Pressure RequirementsOil pressure requirements for the 360 AMC V-8 are asfollows:Figure 7 - 39Gear-to-Body Clearance MeasurementInsert a feeler gauge between the gear tooth and the pumpbody inner wall directly opposite the point of the gear mesh(Figure 7-40). Select a feeler gauge that fits snugly but canbe inserted freely.Rotate the gears and measure the clearance of each tooth andbody in this manner. The correct clearance is 0.013-0.064mm (0.0005-0.0025"), with 0.013 mm (0.0005") preferred. If the gear-to-body clearance is more than specified, measure the gear diameter with a micrometer. If the geardiameter is correct and the gear end clearance is correct andthe relief valve is functioning properly, replace the timingcase cover. If the gear diameter is incorrect, replace thegears and idler shaft.Note: If the oil pump shaft or distributor drive shaft isbroken, inspect for a loose oil pump gear-to-shaft fit orworn front cover. Oversize pump shafts are not available. At Idle Speed (600 rpm). ... 13 psi ..... .90 kPaAt 1,600+ rpm .......... .37-75 psi. ... 255-5 17 kPaOil Pressure Relief. ....... 75 psi ...... 517 WaOil Pump PrimingThe lubrication system should be checked to ensure that itis supplying pressure to the bearings before any attempt ismade to start the engine. If the engine is run without oilpressure for even for a few seconds, there will be extensivedamage done to the engine. After installing a mechanical oil pressure gauge (only if yourvehicle is not already equipped with an oil pressure gauge),remove all the spark plugs in order to relieve the compressionin the cylinders and to prevent the engine from starting. Theengine should be turned over with the starter motor until theoil pressure gauge shows a reading of over 10 psi.The pump can be manually primed instead of turning thewhole engine to get oil pressure and supply the bearings withoil before the engine is started. This method is preferred butrequires a special adapter (usually a modified intermediateshaft) to be made in order to drive the oil pump only.Once you have determined that the engine does have oilpressure, the spark plugs may be reinstalled and the enginemay be started. When the engine starts, the gauge shouldshow a minimum reading of 90 kPa (13 psi) at 600 rpm(idlle speed).IFigure 7 - 40...Til
