OFF-ROAD DRIVINGOff-Roading and RacingWe pride ourselves on the off-road capability of our Jeeps. The explosion of the Sport Utility Vehicle market (and oftrucks in general) has afforded us many opportunities thatdidn’t exist in the past. It has also presented us with manychallenges we have never had to face before. Thesevehicles are no longer strictly “workhorses.”Our biggest challenge is satisfying both the on-road andoff-road needs of our customers without sacrificingperformance in either area. The fact that only 20% of Jeepowners (estimated) actually take their vehicles off-roaddoes not mean that we can abandon them. The off-roadcapability of Jeeps is critical to brand identity, and is whatthe customer is buying. That is why we continue to make allof our Jeep products Rubicon Trail-capable.The Rubicon Trail is considered the benchmark that allproduction Jeeps must negotiate. It is located in the Sierra-Nevada mountains of east central California, southwest ofReno, Nevada. It is a rugged, rocky terrain that most of ourcompetitors cannot negotiate. There is a short Rubicon-liketrail at Chrysler’s Chelsea (Michigan) Proving Grounds.Jeep products are more suitable than trucks to off-roaddriving due in part to their shorter wheelbase, shorter bodyoverhangs, greater ground clearance and suspension travel.OFF-ROADING AND RACING 4510 You may need to lower the tire pressure, depending onthe terrain you are negotiating. This will soften the tiresand expand the footprint for greater flotation, whichresults in more traction when driving over rocks or insand. It will also cushion your ride. In loose sand, youmay want to lower the pressure down to 20 lbs. If youget stuck in sand, snow, or ice, you may want to lowerit even further, down to 10 Ibs. On trails like theRubicon, you will want pressures of 22 to 25 Ibs. Toolittle pressure can result in the tire being pushed off therim, causing it to go flat.Note: Don’t forget to restore your tire pressure tomanufacturer’s recommendations once you return tosurfaced roads. It is critical to the life of your tires!PreparationBefore you go off-road, there is some preparation that youmust do. The following items should be adhered to everytime you plan on going off-road.Oil and other fluid levels must be checked and toppedoff, if necessary. The battery must be inspected, making sure that it is good and is secured.Be careful of sharp rocks or limbs that could puncturea sidewall, and ulwuys carry a full-sized spare tire.Make sure that tow hooks are installed on your vehicleand bring tow straps and/or a vehicle with a winch. Ifit is not possible to install tow hooks, know where youcan attach a strap safely. Be certain that there are atleast two vehicles that can assist each other.Take a cellular phone or CB radio in case ofemergencies. Bring boots and shovels.0 Dress appropriately. Assume all of your clothing willget dirty!General AdviceBe sure to memorize the trail in front of you! Get out ofyour vehicle and look in all directions on the trail ahead. This is critical since you cannot always see what is directlyin front of you (especially when going over the top of ahill). There may be turns you need to make or obstacles youneed to avoid. Visualize the route you will take, where youwant to be, where to make turns, etc.. ..T --ll 1 --
