360 AMC V-8 (CRANKSHAFT) 385InstallationFigure 7 - 8Remove the lower locating dowel pin from the engineblock. The dowel pin is required for correct coveralignment. The dowel must be installed after the coveris in position.Use a sharp knife or razor blade to cut both sides of theoil pan gasket flush with the engine block.Apply Permatex No. 2, or equivalent, to both sides ofthe replacement timing case cover gasket. Install thegasket on the timing case cover.Install a replacement front oil pan seal to the bottom ofthe timing case cover. There are two methods ofsealing the timing case cover to the oil pan where theoil pan gaskets were cut off. If replacement oil pangaskets are used, perform step a. If room temperaturevulcanizing (RTV) silicone is used, perform step b.a. Using Oil Pan Gasketsi. Using original gasket pieces as a guide, trimthe replacement gaskets to correspond to theamount cut off in the procedure above.ii. Align the tongues of the replacement oil pangasket pieces with the oil pan seal and cementthem into place on the cover.iii. Apply Permatex No. 2, or equivalent, to thecut off edges of the original oil pan gaskets.iv. Place the timing case cover in position andinstall the front oil pan bolts.v.Tighten the bolts slowly and evenly until thecover aligns with the upper locating dowel.vi. Insert the lower dowel through the cover anddrive it into the corresponding hole in theengine block.vii. Install the remaining cover retaining bolts inthe same location as removed. Tighten allbolts to 34 N*m (25 ft-lbs) torque.b. Using RTVi. Apply a coating of RTV silicone 3.175 mm(1/8") thick on the timing case cover flanges.Use Mopar Gasket-In-A-Tube, or equivalent.The flanges must be clean and dry.ii.Place the cover in position. Align it with thetop dowel.iii. Loosely install the front cover retaining boltsin the same location as removed.iv. Insert the lower dowel through the cover anddrive it into the corresponding hole in theengine block.v. Install the remaining cover retaining bolts andtighten all bolts to 34 N*m (25 ft-lbs) torque.vi. Apply a small bead of RTV to the jointbetween the pan and the cover and force itinto place with a finger.vii. Apply a drop of Loctite, or equivalent, to theoil pan bolts and tighten until snug. DO NOTover-tighten because the oil pan will distort.5. Once the timing case cover is sealed to the oil pan,install the vibration damper. Tighten the retaining boltto 122 Nem (90 ft-lbs) torque.6.Install the damper pulley. Tighten the retaining bolts to41 Nom (30 ft-lbs) torque.7. Install the fuel pump.8. Install the distributor with the rotor and housing in thesame position as removed.9. Install the distributor cap and connect the heater hose.10. Install the power steering pump, air pump andmounting bracket, if removed.11. Install the alternator, alternator mounting bracket andback idler pulley assembly.12. Install the air conditioner compressor and bracketassembly, if removed.13. Install the fan and hub assembly.14. Install all drive belts and adjust to the specified tension.15. Connect the radiator hoses and bypass hose.16, Fill the cooling system to the specified level.Warning! Use extreme caution when the engine isoperating. DO NOT stand in a direct line with the fan. DONOT put hands near pulleys, belts or the fan. DO NOTwear loose clothing.17. Start the engine and inspect for oil and coolant leaks.18. Adjust the initial ignition timing.
