1 st WorkshopXIII International Feed Technology SymposiumTribulus terrestris dry extractPresentationBulgarian scientists have recently discovered the potential of a dry plant extract fromannual herb Tribulus terrestris L (Zygophylaceae) in animal nutrition as ecologicaladditive to improve the production, reproductive functions and quality of products fromanimal origin, so as to get better their composition and the health in general. The folkmedicine uses this herb in human as aphrodisiacs, diuretics and as a medicine decreasingblood pressure, cholesterol and glucose. Substances found in herbs have stimulating andregulating effects on metabolic processes and could reduce environmental stress.Tribulus terrestris extract contains biologically active substances as steroids, saponins, flavonoids, alkaloids, unsaturated fatty acids, vitamins, tannins etc. The main activecomponents are saponins of the furostanol type: protodioscine and protograciline.Bulgarian product has trade name of Vemoherb-T, produced by firm of Vemo 99 Ltd.,Sofia, Bulgaria. Up to now, Bulgarian experimental works showed that Vemoherb - Thas: Significant positive effect on production (poultry); Sure positive effect onreproductive capacity and spermatogenesis (rams, White Plymouth Rock mini cocks andGuinea fowls, Nikolova et al., 2009); 29 % positive effect on serum testosterone (broilerparents, Kashamov, 2007); Significant positive effect on the blood level of Ca (poultry);Significant negative effect on the blood level of glucose (poultry); Sure negative effecton blood triglycerides and total cholesterol (poultry); Contradictory effect on bloodserum protein (poultry); No sure effect on egg yolk lipids and fatty aids composition(laying hens, Grigorova, 2008). There exist no data concerning the effect of dry extractof Tribulus terrestris, with trade name of Vemoherb-T produced by firm of Vemo 99Ltd., Sofia, Bulgaria in bulls of service. This study was conducted to asses the biologicaleffect of Vemoherb -T on the blood biochemical changes and sperm both quality andquantity in bulls of service.Material and MethodsMaterial: Animals: 9 bulls of service from three different breeds and different ages; Startof experiment: 06.11.2008; End of Experiment: 26.01.2009; Duration of experiment: 2 x40 days and after-effect control (40 days); Feeding: daily rations, by meadow hay (65%)and compound feed (35 %);Additive: Vemoherb T (3 mg/kg body weight/daily)79
