For the purpose of identification of students with potential for advancedplacement, PSAT Preparation Camps will be reserved for students in grade 9 and grade 10, withstudents completing the PSAT in Grade 10.Upon identification of students with potential to succeed in advanced placement, parentworkshops will be conducted to ensure parents/guardians of targeted students understand theimportance of advanced coursework and higher education. As indicated in nationwide research,student achievement within high-need populations is heavily influenced by parentalinvolvement 6 .As a precursor to enrollment in advanced placement coursework, the project will offer an APPreparation Course during the summer. This credit-bearing course will focus on thedevelopment of skills needed for success in advanced placement coursework, such as study andtime management skills.The district currently does not offer online advanced placement courses to the general studentpopulation; however, limited advanced placement courses are available to students enrolled fulltimewith the Seminole County Virtual School (SCVS). As such, a need is identified to provideaccess to online course offerings for students within the target schools – both in hybrid andcomplete web-based formats. Through the project, several activities have been developed tosupport expanded access to advanced placement outside the typical school day. One suchactivity is the transformation of an existing AP Biology course section into a blended learning, or“hybrid” format, which will allow students to split course time between in-class activities andonline presentation of materials and additional resources.
