For the purpose of identification of students with potential for advancedplacement, PSAT Preparation Camps will be reserved for students <strong>in</strong> grade 9 and grade 10, withstudents complet<strong>in</strong>g the PSAT <strong>in</strong> Grade 10.Upon identification of students with potential to succeed <strong>in</strong> advanced placement, parentworkshops will be conducted to ensure parents/guardians of targeted students understand theimportance of advanced coursework and higher education. As <strong>in</strong>dicated <strong>in</strong> nationwide research,student achievement with<strong>in</strong> high-need populations is heavily <strong>in</strong>fluenced by parental<strong>in</strong>volvement 6 .As a precursor to enrollment <strong>in</strong> advanced placement coursework, the project will offer an APPreparation Course dur<strong>in</strong>g the summer. This credit-bear<strong>in</strong>g course will focus on thedevelopment of skills needed for success <strong>in</strong> advanced placement coursework, such as study andtime management skills.The district currently does <strong>not</strong> offer onl<strong>in</strong>e advanced placement courses to the general studentpopulation; however, limited advanced placement courses are available to students enrolled fulltimewith the Sem<strong>in</strong>ole <strong>County</strong> Virtual School (SCVS). As such, a need is identified to provideaccess to onl<strong>in</strong>e course offer<strong>in</strong>gs for students with<strong>in</strong> the target schools – both <strong>in</strong> hybrid andcomplete web-based formats. Through the project, several activities have been developed tos<strong>up</strong>port expanded access to advanced placement outside the typical school day. One suchactivity is the transformation of an exist<strong>in</strong>g AP Biology course section <strong>in</strong>to a blended learn<strong>in</strong>g, or“hybrid” format, which will allow students to split course time between <strong>in</strong>-class activities andonl<strong>in</strong>e presentation of materials and additional resources. Second, the district will add twoAdvanced Placement courses to the SCVS academic offer<strong>in</strong>gs. The two courses proposed for6 Sheely-Moore, A., & Bratton, S. (2010).
