Family Policy Compliance OfficeU.S. Department of Education400 Maryland Avenue, SWWash<strong>in</strong>gton, D.C. 20202-5901Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA)Notice for Directory InformationThe Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), a Federal law, and § 1002.22, Florida Statutes,require that the School Board of Sem<strong>in</strong>ole <strong>County</strong> and its constituent adm<strong>in</strong>istrative departments and schools[SCPS], with certa<strong>in</strong> exceptions, obta<strong>in</strong> your written consent prior to the disclosure of personally identifiable<strong>in</strong>formation from your child’s education records. SCPS may, however, disclose appropriately designated“directory <strong>in</strong>formation” without written consent, unless you have advised your child’s pr<strong>in</strong>cipal to the contrary <strong>in</strong>accordance with District procedures. The primary purpose of directory <strong>in</strong>formation is to allow SCPS to <strong>in</strong>cludethis type of <strong>in</strong>formation from your child’s education records <strong>in</strong> certa<strong>in</strong> school publications. Components ofdirectory <strong>in</strong>formation are rout<strong>in</strong>ely published <strong>in</strong>:A playbill, show<strong>in</strong>g your student’s role <strong>in</strong> a drama production;A school’s year<strong>book</strong> or similar publication;Honor roll or other recognition lists;Graduation programs;School newspapers;School newsletters; andSports activity sheets, such as for wrestl<strong>in</strong>g, show<strong>in</strong>g weight and height of team members.Directory <strong>in</strong>formation, which is <strong>in</strong>formation that is generally <strong>not</strong> considered harmful or an <strong>in</strong>vasion of privacy ifreleased, will <strong>not</strong> be disclosed to outside organizations without a parent’s prior written consent, except forcompanies that contract for school photographs, graduation <strong>in</strong>vitations and related materials, and thatmanufacture class r<strong>in</strong>gs or publish year<strong>book</strong>s. Directory <strong>in</strong>formation will be released to local, state, and federallaw enforcement agencies, for official bus<strong>in</strong>ess only. In addition, two federal laws require the SCPS that receivesassistance under the Elementary and Secondary Education Act of 1965 (ESEA) to provide military recruiters,<strong>up</strong>on request, with the follow<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>formation – names, addresses and telephone list<strong>in</strong>gs of middle and highschool students (secondary students) – unless parents have advised the LEA that they do <strong>not</strong> want their student’s<strong>in</strong>formation disclosed without their prior written consent. 1If you do <strong>not</strong> want SCPS to disclose directory <strong>in</strong>formation from your child’s education records without your priorwritten consent, you must <strong>not</strong>ify your child’s pr<strong>in</strong>cipal <strong>in</strong> writ<strong>in</strong>g by Friday, September 2, 2011. SCPS hasdesignated the follow<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>formation as directory <strong>in</strong>formation:● Student’s name● Participation <strong>in</strong> officially● Addressrecognized activities and sports● Telephone list<strong>in</strong>g● Weight and height of members of athletic teams● Student ID number, user ID,● Honors and awards receivedor other unique personal identifier● Grade levelused to communicate <strong>in</strong> electronic● Date of Birthsystems that can<strong>not</strong> be used to access ● Current or most recent school of attendanceeducation records without a PIN, password,etc. (A student’s SSN, whole or <strong>in</strong> part may <strong>not</strong> be used for this purpose)Note: Opt out, however, does <strong>not</strong> apply to prevent SCPS disclos<strong>in</strong>g or requir<strong>in</strong>g the disclosure of a student’sname, identifier, or <strong>in</strong>stitutional email address <strong>in</strong> a class <strong>in</strong> which the student is enrolled (Crooms AOIT) or toprevent the student from wear<strong>in</strong>g or display<strong>in</strong>g a school or school board issued student ID card that exhibits<strong>in</strong>formation that may constitute directory <strong>in</strong>formation.1 These laws are: Section 9528 of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (20 U.S.C. § 7908) and10 U.S.C. § 503(c).34Page 569
