studies, teachers will receive first hand experiences <strong>in</strong> the real-world application of STEMconcepts which will augment their ability to fully communicate the pathway of learn<strong>in</strong>g fromsecondary to post-secondary, <strong>in</strong>to the workforce. Teachers will then possess the tools to offerstudents opportunities to engage <strong>in</strong> applied science and mathematics activities that encourageadvanced critical th<strong>in</strong>k<strong>in</strong>g and problem solv<strong>in</strong>g. The teach<strong>in</strong>g of science and mathematicsconcepts utiliz<strong>in</strong>g real-world applications and activities will enable teachers to demonstrate thepractical nature of the STEM discipl<strong>in</strong>es and encourage <strong>in</strong>creased <strong>in</strong>terest and academicachievement.As an activity to s<strong>up</strong>port student read<strong>in</strong>ess and success <strong>in</strong> advance placement coursework,vertical and horizontal <strong>in</strong>structional alignment will be a major focus of the teach<strong>in</strong>g and learn<strong>in</strong>gcomponent of the project. To allow for widespread success <strong>in</strong> AP, it will be imperative thatstudents are provided a solid foundation for each content area. As such, the project will s<strong>up</strong>portthe development of vertical alignment teams across each major academic area with AP coursesoffered at the targeted schools (i.e. Biology, Algebra, and American Literature). To facilitatevertical and horizontal <strong>in</strong>structional alignment, as well as s<strong>up</strong>port advanced placement<strong>in</strong>struction across all subjects, the project will implement an AP Summit. The summit will be atwo-day professional development activity conducted <strong>in</strong> summer 2012, 2013 and 2014, with atarget attendance of 200 teachers. Attendees will be high school AP teachers and middle schoolteachers from feeder schools to the targeted high schools. The content of the AP Summit will<strong>in</strong>clude an <strong>in</strong>troduction to AP and content-area breakout sessions focused on <strong>in</strong>structionalplann<strong>in</strong>g, vertical/horizontal alignment discussions, and test writ<strong>in</strong>g.Project Narrative Page 19 of 28Page 23
