<strong>in</strong>clusion <strong>in</strong> the project are AP Computer Science and AP Environmental Science. F<strong>in</strong>ally, <strong>in</strong>recognition of the probability that students from low socio-economic households will <strong>not</strong> haveaccess to computers and/or <strong>in</strong>ternet service, the project will provide open computer lab hours oneday per week at each of the target schools. These labs will be staffed with a certified teacher tofacilitate activities with<strong>in</strong> the lab. In addition, to s<strong>up</strong>port onl<strong>in</strong>e coursework, 12 laptops will beprovided at each school and made available for check-out by low-<strong>in</strong>come students enrolled <strong>in</strong>advanced placement coursework.(4) Methods to Increase Student Achievement on Advanced Placement TestsCo<strong>up</strong>led with the low enrollment of low-<strong>in</strong>come students <strong>in</strong> advanced placement is thesuccess rate of this student population. The percentage of students who pass (def<strong>in</strong>ed as a scoreof 3+) Advanced Placement tests each year across the target schools is dismal when review<strong>in</strong>gthe data on sub-gro<strong>up</strong> achievement presented. While the enhancement of teach<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> thesecourses will be vital to student success, the implementation of s<strong>up</strong>plementary s<strong>up</strong>port activities isnecessary. Academic <strong>in</strong>tervention s<strong>up</strong>port and mentor<strong>in</strong>g specifically for advanced placementstudents will be implemented as part of the project to <strong>in</strong>crease student achievement with<strong>in</strong> theAP courses and most <strong>not</strong>ably on AP tests.Academic tutor<strong>in</strong>g sessions, which are specific to advanced placement coursework, will beprovided at each of the target schools. These sessions will assume the format of one-to-onetutor<strong>in</strong>g and small gro<strong>up</strong> lessons, with each session tailored to s<strong>up</strong>port the <strong>in</strong>dividual needs of theparticipants. Led by certified teachers, the sessions will be conducted two times per week forthree hours per day. While the number of students attend<strong>in</strong>g each session will vary depend<strong>in</strong>g onneed, the maximum teacher to student ratio will be 1:15.Project Narrative Page 17 of 28Page 21
