Students who are adm<strong>in</strong>istratively assigned to a school other than their zoned school for violations of the StudentConduct and Discipl<strong>in</strong>e Code or as the result of the entry of a no contact order may only participate <strong>in</strong> activitiesor events at their assigned school, except as otherwise limited or prohibited by the Citizenship Standards forparticipation <strong>in</strong> school sponsored extra-curricular activities.A student who is adm<strong>in</strong>istratively assigned to an alternative discipl<strong>in</strong>ary school or program or a school other thanthe student’s zoned school may request a review of the assignment by the School Board Hear<strong>in</strong>g Officer. Theassignment shall, however, be effective <strong>up</strong>on the term<strong>in</strong>ation of any suspension or if there is no suspension,immediately <strong>up</strong>on be<strong>in</strong>g made. Upon review, the School Board may take such action, as it deems appropriate.Note:State Board Rule 6A-1.0404 authorizes the use of a student’s juvenile justice <strong>in</strong>formation and crim<strong>in</strong>alrecord <strong>in</strong> conjunction with other relevant <strong>in</strong>formation for the purpose of review<strong>in</strong>g a student’seducational placement and need for services, and to protect the safety of other students and schoolpersonnel.REVOCATION OF VOLUNTARY TRANSFERThe voluntary transfer of a student from one school to a<strong>not</strong>her, pursuant to Policy 5.30, may be revoked and thestudent returned to his/her zoned school of attendance if tard<strong>in</strong>ess, unexcused absences or behavior/discipl<strong>in</strong>eproblems develop at the receiv<strong>in</strong>g school.STUDENT APPEARANCE AND DRESS CODEResponsibility for the dress and appearance of students enrolled <strong>in</strong> the Sem<strong>in</strong>ole <strong>County</strong> Public <strong>Schools</strong> primarilyrests with parents and the students. Some student apparel, however, may <strong>not</strong> be appropriate to wear to schooleven though that same apparel may be appropriate to wear <strong>in</strong> other sett<strong>in</strong>gs. To assist parents and students <strong>in</strong>mak<strong>in</strong>g appropriate fashion and groom<strong>in</strong>g decisions for school, the School Board has established the follow<strong>in</strong>gm<strong>in</strong>imal guidel<strong>in</strong>es for the appearance and dress of students.The standards of appearance for students shall <strong>in</strong>sure that the students be clean, neat, and properly dressed. Theyshall observe modes of dress and standards of personal groom<strong>in</strong>g which are appropriate for the academicenvironment.It is the responsibility of the pr<strong>in</strong>cipal to see that the dress appearance of any student shall <strong>not</strong> be extreme, to thepo<strong>in</strong>t of creat<strong>in</strong>g a disturbance, or is hazardous to self, others, or school property, whether or <strong>not</strong> the specific caseis covered by the <strong>in</strong>formation below. The pr<strong>in</strong>cipal or pr<strong>in</strong>cipal’s designee has the f<strong>in</strong>al authority for <strong>in</strong>terpret<strong>in</strong>gwhether a student’s apparel/appearance conforms to the dress code.All schools have the option of adopt<strong>in</strong>g a standard dress code (uniform) when developed andagreed <strong>up</strong>on <strong>in</strong> collaboration with their School Advisory Council. <strong>Schools</strong> that adopt a standarddress code policy should <strong>in</strong>clude the follow<strong>in</strong>g: Collared shirts, sleeves, khaki or darkpants/shorts/skorts, def<strong>in</strong>ed shirt colors (e.g. school colors).(1) HEADNo hats, caps, visors, hoods, bandanas, sunglasses or other head gear may be worn on campusexcept with adm<strong>in</strong>istrative permission (i.e. medical necessity, religious, school related events)(2) UPPER GARMENTS(a) Garments must be of a lengthand fit that are suitable to thebuild and stature of the student.(b) All garments must have acollar or sleeves. Therefore, thefollow<strong>in</strong>g items are prohibited:halter tops, tube tops, backlessdresses/tops, spaghetti straps, andtank tops.(c) Neckl<strong>in</strong>es of all <strong>up</strong>pergarments must be modest. Lowcut neckl<strong>in</strong>es are prohibited,and the cut of garments must<strong>not</strong> expose undergarments orcleavage.15(d) Shirts must touch, at am<strong>in</strong>imum, the top portion oflower garments at all times.(e) Garments that aredistract<strong>in</strong>g or <strong>in</strong>appropriateare prohibited, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g but<strong>not</strong> limited to those with seethroughmaterials, sk<strong>in</strong>tightitems, pajamas, trench coats,bandanas, rips/tears, pr<strong>in</strong>tedprofanity, orlanguage/symbols/styles thatpromote the use of alcohol,drugs, tobacco products,Page 548
