Engelstalig (ABI) WERKWIJZE RESULTATEN Via Google (www.google.be) werd informatie opgezocht omtrent ‘acquired brain injury’, al dan niet in combinatie met ‘definition’. Naast het opzoeken van verschillende definities die hiervoor gehanteerd worden werd eveneens nagegaan welke doelgroepen en oorzaken worden geincludeerd en welke kenmerken worden beschreven. De voorkeur ging hierbij uit naar websites van organisaties die professionelen (en onderzoekers) vertegenwoordigen werkzaam in het veld van ABI, al dan niet in combinatie met zelfhulp- en andere belangengroepen. Op de website van de United Kingdom Acquired Brain Injury Forum (UKABIF) ddddddd (http://www.ukabif.org.uk/) wordt ABI omschreven als een “nondegenerative injury to the brain that has occurred since birth, caused by an external physical force or by metabolic derangement. It includes traumatic brain injuries - such as open or closed head injuries-, or non-traumatic brain injuries - such as those caused by strokes and other vascular accidents, tumours, infectious diseases, hypoxia, metabolic disorders (e.g. liver and kidney diseases or diabetic coma) and toxic products taken into the body through inhalation or ingestion”. Men geeft hier verder geen informatie aan omtrent de gevolgen of andere kenmerken van ABI Op de website van de Ontario Neurotrauma Foundation eeeeeee (http://www.onf.org/knowledge/glossary.htm) worden zowel acquired als traumatic brain injury gedefinieerd en onderscheiden. ABI wordt gedefinieerd als “damage to the brain that occurs after birth and is not related to a congenital disorder or a degenerative disease. Damage may be caused by a traumatic injury to the head or by a non-traumatic cause such as a tumor, aneurysm, anoxia or infection”. De definitie van traumatic brain injury maakt eveneens melding van de beperkingen die eruit resulteren. TBI wordt omschreven als een “insult to the brain, not of a degenerative nature, but caused by an external force, that may produce a diminished or altered state of consciousness, which results in impairment of cognitive abilities or physical functioning. It can also result in the disturbance of behavioural or emotional functioning. These impairments may be either temporary or permanent and may cause partial (mild) to total (severe) functional disability or psychosocial maladjustment”. De website van de Toronto ABI Network fffffff (http://www.abinetwork.ca/definition.htm) bevat een definitie van ABI die werd ontwikkeld door de Clinical Data Working Group van dit netwerk op basis van een consensus onder clinici en professionelen werkzaam in het veld.
