being duly sworn according to <strong>the</strong> law, made <strong>the</strong> following statement:<br />

Q What is your name? <br />

A Fried*& Karl von EBERSTEIN. <br />

Q Is it correct that <strong>the</strong> concentration camps were managed ex-<br />

clusively by <strong>the</strong> SS Economics and Main Office (SS Wirtschaftsunu<br />

Hauptamt), in o<strong>the</strong>r words through <strong>the</strong> line <strong>of</strong> command<br />

<strong>of</strong> Himmler, Pohl, Gluecks, camp commander, and that Kaltenbrunner<br />

as chief <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> RSHA had no influence upon <strong>the</strong>m?<br />

A Yes. Kaltenbrunner was in a position to send people as inmates<br />

to concentration camps, but was in no position to give orders<br />

concerning <strong>the</strong> administration <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se camps.<br />

Q Is it correct that all orders concerning questions <strong>of</strong> concentration<br />

camps could not be issued by anyone but <strong>the</strong> above named<br />

persons within <strong>the</strong> jurisdiction <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> above mentioned agencies?<br />

A Yes. orders could only be given by Himrnler, Pohl, Gluecks<br />

and <strong>the</strong> camp commander.<br />

Q Is it correct that all questions concerning concentration camps<br />

were treated with <strong>the</strong> utmost secrecy; and that <strong>the</strong> reason for<br />

this lies in <strong>the</strong> fact that <strong>the</strong> inhumane methods used in <strong>the</strong><br />

concentration camps became known only to <strong>the</strong> small circle <strong>of</strong><br />

people named above, even to <strong>the</strong> exclusibn <strong>of</strong> all o<strong>the</strong>rs, including<br />

<strong>the</strong> highest <strong>of</strong>ficials <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Reich?<br />

A Everything concerning concentration camys was treated with<br />

<strong>the</strong> utmost secrecy is true, but I do not know whe<strong>the</strong>r or not<br />

<strong>the</strong> highest <strong>of</strong>ficials <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Reich know about <strong>the</strong> treatment <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> inmates.<br />

Q Do you know whe<strong>the</strong>r Kaltenbrunner ever visited <strong>the</strong> Dachau<br />

concentration camp?<br />

A I do not know.<br />

Q Do you know that Kaltenbrunner had serious differences with<br />

<strong>the</strong> Munich District Leader (Gauleiter) Giessler and on account<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>m was cautioned by Bormann?<br />

A Yes, I know that Kaltenbrunner had serious differences with<br />

<strong>the</strong> Munich District Leader (Gauleiter) Giessler but I do not<br />

know whe<strong>the</strong>r Bormann cautioned him or not.<br />

Q Do you know that Kaltenbrunner had been in Austria since<br />

19 April 1945 and did not return to Berlin?<br />

A Yes, I know that Kaltenbmer was in Austria about <strong>the</strong> last<br />

part <strong>of</strong> April, 1945, since I met him in Salzburg and also at<br />

Berchtesgaden. I do not know whe<strong>the</strong>r he returned to Berlin<br />

or not.
