To all ami sc.vdkv whom these presents do or may concenie, I, Sir Alexander<br />

Arcskine of Cambo, knight and baronet, lyon king of armes, considering that by the<br />

twenty-cue act of the thrid session of the second parliament of King Charles the<br />

Second of ever blessed memory, I am impowercd to visit the whole amies of noblemen,<br />

prelates, barons and gentlemen within this kingdom, and to distinguish them with<br />

congruent differences, and to matriculate the same in my books and registers, and to<br />

give amies to vertnous and well-deserving persons, and extracts of all armes expressjing<br />

the hlason thereof under my hand and .scall of otEce : Which register is by the said<br />

act appoyutcd to be respected as the true and unrepcalable rule of all armes and<br />

bearings in <strong>Scotland</strong>, to remain with the lyon office as the publiet register of the<br />

kingdom. Therefore, conforme to the tenor of the .said act of parliament, I tcstifie<br />

and make known that the coat armour appertaining and belonging to the right honor-<br />

able William, Earle of Annandale and Ilarti'ell, A'iscount of Annand, Lord Johnston<br />

of Lochwod, Lochmaben. Mofletdaill and Evendaill, etc., and approven of and conDinicd<br />

by me to liim, is matrieuUit in my said publiet register upon the day and date of tliese<br />

presents, and is thus blasoneil, videlicet, The said William, Earle of Annandale,<br />

etc., for his atclieivement and ensignes armoriall, bears quarterly, first, argent, the cross<br />

of Saint Andrew sable, on a cheife, gules, three cusheons, or, as his lordships own<br />

patcrnall Cuat by the name of Johnston ; second, or, an anchor gules, by the name of<br />

Fairliohivi, his lordship haveing mariod Lady Sophia Fairholme, heires of Craigyhall ;
