Agkeemf.xt made at the feast of St. Jlartin, in the year of the Incarnation 1218,
between P[atric], Earl of Dunbar, and C'[hristina ?], the eomitess, and Sir R[obert] de
Brus ; viz., the earl and countess have demised to Sir Robert all the land they have in
Hertnii;.sa (Hertnes.s), viz., of the counte.?s's dower, for the term of eight years, for 30/.
of silver, and C^. yearly, one moiety at Pentecost and the other at Martinmas ; saving
the third part of the market and the fair of ITertpulle (Hartlepool) to the earl and
countess, if they and the said Sir Robert can acrjuirc these. And it is to be observed
that Sir Robert shall pay the money to the said earl and his said mother, C'[hristina ?],
the countess, so long as they shall warrant the said land to him. Also the said Robert
shall not demise the said land for eight years in such mode as he received it from his
gi-andfather (avi). His pledges are :—Humphrey de Cardino (Javdine), Hugh de Corri,
AVilliam de Heriz, Robert de Crossebi, Richard de Dosco, G. son of John (Joliuston),
Robert de Tremor.

lauds in Annan, to which Gilbert son of John is a witnes.?. Circa 121 S.-
' William, .sou of Ralf the Lardonar,' hi.? brother David, his sons and their heir (sic),
have quitclaimed, abjured and resigned per fi'Hiim et baruhtm, to Robert de Brus and
his heirs, all the land which they or their predecessors held of him and his predecessors
within the vill of Anant, instead of the account (compolus) of David, Iris brother,
when he was servant of Sir Robert dc Brus in Herterviile, which ^VilliaIll undertook
to pay, but can lot ; and for lOO.--., which the said Sir Robert has allowed him
