Agkeemf.xt made at the feast of St. Jlartin, in the year of the Incarnation 1218,<br />

between P[atric], Earl of Dunbar, and C'[hristina ?], the eomitess, and Sir R[obert] de<br />

Brus ; viz., the earl and countess have demised to Sir Robert all the land they have in<br />

Hertnii;.sa (Hertnes.s), viz., of the counte.?s's dower, for the term of eight years, for 30/.<br />

of silver, and C^. yearly, one moiety at Pentecost and the other at Martinmas ; saving<br />

the third part of the market and the fair of ITertpulle (Hartlepool) to the earl and<br />

countess, if they and the said Sir Robert can acrjuirc these. And it is to be observed<br />

that Sir Robert shall pay the money to the said earl and his said mother, C'[hristina ?],<br />

the countess, so long as they shall warrant the said land to him. Also the said Robert<br />

shall not demise the said land for eight years in such mode as he received it from his<br />

gi-andfather (avi). His pledges are :—Humphrey de Cardino (Javdine), Hugh de Corri,<br />

AVilliam de Heriz, Robert de Crossebi, Richard de Dosco, G. son of John (Joliuston),<br />

Robert de Tremor.<br />

within the vill of Anant, instead of the account (compolus) of David, Iris brother,<br />

when he was servant of Sir Robert dc Brus in Herterviile, which ^VilliaIll undertook<br />

to pay, but can lot ; and for lOO.--., which the said Sir Robert has allowed him<br />
