Johnstone, resigned, in 162*3, his rights in.Corrie to Sir James Johustoni;<br />

of Johnstone, and received in cxcliange the lands of Giithhead. Tlie<br />

male line of the Johnstones of Corrie and Girthhead ended about the<br />

year 1750, and thej' were then represented by four co hcires.scs.<br />

3. William Johnstone, who, in a crown charter, is designated brolher-gernian<br />

of John and Adani.^ He is also referred to in a contract of date iuli<br />

July 1558,- but nothing furtlier is known of hiin.<br />

In the competition for the Annandale peerage Mr. Edward Ji.lni-<br />

stone of Fnllford Hall claimed, without careful investigation, to pii'Vc<br />

that this "William was his ancestor; but his claim was hidd by the Hun.-,c<br />

of Lords not to have been made out. Indeed, the Lord Clianccllor held<br />

that the William Johnstone of Gratney from whom Mr. Edv/ard John-<br />

stone claimed descent was not a Johnstone of Aunandalo at all.<br />

4. John Johnstone. lie is designated as brother-german of his ehler brothers,<br />

John, Adam, and "\'\'i!liam, in a crown charter of ID 42-3, but except a<br />

reference to him in the Treasurer's Accounts of December 1 5 1 3, when In-<br />

received money to buy a horse, nothing further is known of him.<br />

5. Simon Johnstone, vv-ho is also referred to in the charter of 1542-3, but re-<br />

garding whom notliing further Jias been ascertained.<br />

C. James, not named in the charter of 154:i-3, but is refevicd to in 1501 ;v5<br />

a brother of John Johnstone of Johnstone. He held the lands of<br />

Wamphray, Pocornell, and others. By his wife, Margaret M'Lellan, he<br />

liad is.siie, but his male line ended in 1G56 with the death of John<br />

Johnstone of Wamphray, who left an only daughter, Janet Johnstone."<br />

Besides these, the abbot of Soul-seal was a son of Jaihcs Johnstone. K not<br />

identical with John, tlie son above-named, he must have b' en a natuial son.<br />

Lord Wharton in 1548 refers to him as James Johnstone; while in a family<br />

cuntract of 1558 he is styled John Johnstone. Lord Wharton may have made a<br />

iiiistake, or James, abbot of Soul.=eat, may have died before 15 58.''<br />
