CCCXX WILLIAM, FH;ST MARQUIS OF ANNANDALE, 1672-1721.<br />

Westminster on the ISth of tlie same month. A .suitable mouuinent was<br />

afterwards erected by her eldest son, James, second Marquis of Aunandale,<br />

to commemorate her memory. The monument was executed by James Gibl)S,<br />

architect, and bears the following inscription:<br />

"yEterure memoriffi sacrum lecti-^simtcmatrono^D. Sojihire Fairliolm, Annandite<br />

Marcliioiiissre, Scotia ortn:, cujus ingenii nioruincjuo elegantia cum cximia cor])oris<br />

forma certabat, matris uxorisque laudibus inclyt.'o, tain diligcutis autcm matris<br />

familias ut oblatam rnrum doinesticarum niolcm animo virili et uegotio pari su.s-<br />

tinuerit ; tot deuique virtutibus ornata; ut vitam summa omnium cum admii ationc<br />

morte omnibus dejdorata fiuiverit : Monuuicntum lioc qualccuiii|Ue pietatisgratique<br />

auimi indicium moereus posuit Jac. Jo., fil[ius] nat[u] ma\[imus], Auuandia;<br />

Marcliio. Obiit 13 Deccmbris, anno D. 171C. ^T.tatis 49." i<br />

On tlie same monument arc inscriptions to Lord ^\'il]!am Jolmstouo, and<br />

James, second marquis, both interred in the abbey, but tlie latter in the north<br />

cross thereof.<br />

"Hie etiam jussu ejusdem JIarchionis rcconditas sunt reliquia; D. Gulielmi<br />

Jolmston, fi'atris sui charissinii, ct filii natu sccimdi dicta; jMarchionissaj, c[ui obiit<br />

24° Dec. 1721, Anno ajtatis 26. Ja. Gibes, archi."<br />

"Near this place is also interred James, Jlarqucs of Anuaudale, a nobleman<br />

of great parts and many exccdlent qualities, who died at Naples, 21st February<br />

1730." 2<br />

After the lapse of two years the marquis entered into a second matri-<br />

monial alliance with Charlotta Vauden Bempde, only daugliter of John<br />

Vanden Bempde of Hackness, by Temperance, daughter of John Packer, with<br />

whom he acquired considerable property. The marriage was celebrated on<br />

20th November 1718. A bond of provision was granted by the marquis to<br />

" his beloved spouse," Charlotta, Marchioness of Annandale, for the yearly sum<br />

of £1000 sterling to be paid to her, after the marquis's decease, if he<br />

buried iu the south crosse of the abbey on - Hid. \t. 1030.<br />
