clxvi SIR JAMES JOHXSTOXE OF JOHNSTONE, KNIGHT, 1587-1608.<br />

celebrated Johnstone, but also the cruel and treacherous deed wliich deprived<br />

him of his life, and the sweeping condemnation of it which was given by the<br />

king and parliament. The inscription upon the stone is as follows :<br />

"Heir lyis tlie Ky* Honorabil S"' lames lolnislone of that ilk, Kny',<br />

Depairtit [this life] of 39 zeirs : Qvlia vas maist tresonabillic mvrthcrit vnder<br />

traist be the schot of ane pestelat beliind liis bak be Lord [MJaxvel on the 6 day<br />

of Apryl, tlic zeir of God 1G08 zcirs. For the crevel mvrther he vas maist<br />

ivstlie forfatit of his haile landis, liis armeis rivene in parlament, and himself<br />

banischit the Kingis domiuiovns for the trasou don be him."<br />

The armorial bearings upon the stone consist of two shields of arms : On the<br />

dexter side, the Jolmstoue arms, being the saltire with three cushions in chief.<br />

At the top of the shield a large S for Sir. On cither side in niches an I for<br />

James Johnstone. On the sinister side the ^laxwell and Herries arms, being the<br />

Maxwell cross and three hurcheons in chief, and three in base, surmounted by a label<br />

of tliree points. At the top' of this shield is a large D for Dame. On the dexter<br />

side in a niche a large S for Sara; and on the sinister side a large M for IMaxwell.<br />
