August 1714, advised hiin against u.iaking the visit then, as the court was<br />

nnieli cliauged since the decease of tlie Electress Sophia, and meant to go to<br />

Gohrc at the end of September, where no strangers were admitted, and, in<br />

tlie absence of the court, Hanover was the dullest place in the world. Both<br />

the prince and elector were, he said, exceedingly obliged for the zeal which<br />

the marquis manifested for their interests.^<br />

Annandale now returned liome by way of Paris, where he remained during<br />

August and September 171-1. Lady Lucie Stuart, in letters written from<br />

Paris, to her mother, Mary, Countess of Traquair, mentions visits paid to her<br />

and her sister by the Marrpus of Annandale, the Earl of Carnv,-ath,and others."<br />

On the 21st of December the marquis, in very good health, set out from<br />

London on his return to <strong>Scotland</strong>, where he shortly after arrived in safety.^<br />

Queen Anne died on 1st August 1714, and was succeeded by King George<br />

the First, to whose interest Annandale cordially and unhesitatingly adhered.<br />

The loyalty which Annandale showed to the new monarch on his succession<br />

was higlily appreciated by his IMajesty, who immediately, on 24th September,<br />

appointed liim lord keeper of the privy seal, and Annandale a few days later<br />

took the oaths and his seat as a privy councillor, lie thereafter concurred<br />

with thirty-two other Scottish peers in a representation made to King George<br />
