The life of this chief of Johnstone marks an epoch in the history of his<br />

family. While still under age he made an auspicious marriage with a bride<br />

of the great house of Douglas, who was at the time between twelve and<br />

thirteen years of age. Of that youthful marriage there was eventually the<br />

large family of eleven sons and daughters. The eldest surviviu" son was<br />

raised to tlie dignity of Marquis of Auuandale, and held many of the highest<br />

offices of state. The present young cliief became involved with his father<br />

both in the troubles of tlie Covenant and of tlie Cromwelliau government.<br />

But at the Eestoration, in IGGO, he received from King Charles the<br />

Second the three additional peerages of Earl of Annandale, Viscount of<br />

Annan, and Lord Lochmabeu. He also received the high offices of steward<br />

of Annandale and hereditary keeper of the castle of Lochmaben, and the<br />

erection of many baronies and regalities, including the regality of Moffat.<br />

The dominant and ardent desire of his life was that ail his peerages of John-<br />

stone and Hartfell, wliich were inherited by him from his father, as well as
