afterwards discovered, being Thomas Jardinc of Biruok and Humphrey his<br />

sou, who were condemned to death for that aud other crimes, and executed<br />

at the cross of Ediubm-gli so late as IGOO.^<br />

For the i^urposc of marryiug the Princess Anna of Denmark, King James<br />

set sail for Denmark on 22d October loS9. The marriage took place at<br />

Upsal on the 23d Xo^-enlbel•, and during the royal honeymoon and holidays<br />

the king enjoyed himself to his bent, and v.iote to one of his favourites in<br />

<strong>Scotland</strong> from the castle of Croneburg " where we are dricking and dryving<br />

During the king's absence, Lord John Hamilton, afterwards ]\iarquis of<br />

Hamilton, was appointed lord lieutenant in the South of <strong>Scotland</strong>, iucludinf<br />

the Marches. His lordship, in pursuance of a design to liold a meeting at<br />

Peebles with tlie ^Maxwells, Johnstones, aud other Border lairds, wrote to<br />

Johnstone to attend a meeting upon tlic 30ih of November at Peebles, and<br />

give his good advice regarding the keeping of the peace, repressing of<br />

oflenders, and generally concerning the common quietness of the realm.<br />

His lordshij) further desired Johnstone to canse a couple of the principals<br />

of every branch of his servants and dependers that were in use of pledging<br />

or giving security to be Jikev/isc in Peebles on that day that he mi"ht<br />

understand the names of the pledges, where they lay, and who would inter-<br />

change them. He added a list of brandies, including Jok of Kirkhill<br />

the Johnstones of Lockerbie and others.- At the meeting Lord Hamilton<br />

inquired about the principal troubles an.d disorders of the Borders. Lord<br />

Maxwell, who was present, replied that he knew of none in the West<br />

March since the king's departure except the reset of the laird of Wester-<br />

hall. !Maxwell also complained that Johnstone, without commission, held<br />
