and oLliors. The resiniialion was made in full couit of tlie barony, and in<br />

presence of the witnesses. Tiie date is not given, but, from the witnesses'<br />

names, it appears to liave been made Ijetwecn the years 119J and ISlb^<br />

As ' G. de Jouistiine,'' lie witnessed a charter by "Willianr Erucc,<br />

grandson of the first llobert Ibuce of Aunandale, to Ivo of Kirkepatric of<br />

the land in the fee of rcnresa.v, which was called Thorbrec and "Willambi,<br />

and the toun of Blacwde. liichard de Eosco, Eobert of Crossebi, AVilliam<br />

of Ifeneuile, Ahru of Dunwidi, and otliers, are also witnesses. This is the<br />

earliest charter which contains the surname of Johnstone. It is undated,<br />

but it must have Ijcen granted previous to the year 12M, about wliich<br />

time AVilliam I'ruee died.<br />

Nor was Gilbert de Joncstun a loss important personage when the<br />

next linbcrt Eruee, wlio was great-grandson of the first Eobert Evucc,<br />

lord of Aunandale, held that lord.ship in succession to his father, "William<br />

i^ruce. A\'c find Gilbert Johnstone, or Gilbert, son of Jolm, as be is<br />

still called, acting as a security in a transaction between the two great<br />

houses of Erucc and lOunbar. A\'illia!a Eruce, lord of Aunandale, died<br />

in or about 12M; and his widow, Ghristiana, married, as her sccoad lin.dKDid,<br />

I'atrick, first of that name, Earl of Dunbar. In consequence of that juar-<br />

riage, slie and Earl Eatiick, in the year 1218, entered into an arrangement<br />

with her son, Eobert Erucc, now lord of Aunandale, as to her dov.er lands<br />

in Ilertness, Uurliam. She leased these lauds to her son for a term of<br />
