ture, and some of the almost daily letters whicli he received and despatched
during the greater part of Octohcr and first week of November are i)rintcd in
this work. The correspondence includes letters from General Stanwix,
Viscount Lonsdale, tlie Viscount of Townshend, and others, which show the
movements and designs of the two opposing forces in the country.^ Tlicy
relate among other things, that the rebels had a design ujion Newcastle,
wliich, being an open town and mucli exposed, and also not well affected to
the government, v/as thought to be a favourable place to attack. But they
were disappL'inled, as the place was well defended botlr by foot-soldiers and
dragoons. Carlisle again was fortified, and it also had a strong garrison.
Viscount Lonsdale, who commanded there, promised Annandale, in case he
was attacked, to join him with four or five hundred men armed with such
weapons as tlie country people could get. General Stanwix also promised
him what assistance he could for the public safety. Holy Island, where there
were stores of arms and ammunition, was captured by a ship sailing from
France, but it was immediately recaptured by a force from Berwick.
Annandale left Dumfries and went to Edinlim^h on 20th October, leavinc:
the deputy-lieutenants in charge in his absence.-
The Viscount of Stormont wrote to Annandale offering to surrender to
him. His letter is dated 20th October, and overtook Annandale on his way
to Edinburgh. The latter replied that if he had known anything of his
design he would have stayed at Dumfries. But if Siorniont surrendered to
him or his deputies he would use his interest to recommend his early sub-
mission to his Majesty.* The Viscount did surrender himself, and was
detained by xVnnandale.
Dumfries was again tlireatcncd liy tlie rebels. This wa.s in the bc^innin"
