and Janu'.s, Lord Johnstone, entered into a contract at Edinburgh, on 7th<br />

April 163G. In this contract' the Viscount, remembering the great love<br />

which was between him and his late spouse, ratified her will, and renoiiuced<br />

all claim to the bonds, securities, and others whicli it contained, with<br />

certain exceptions therein specified, and also all goods and plenishings<br />

in her dwelling-house at Edinbuigh at the time of her decease, or in the<br />

place of Lochwood, with all jewels, ornaments, and money, and the maills of<br />

her conjunct fee, liferent, and terce lands of the living of Jolmstoiie. In<br />

respect of v.hicli Lord Johnstone acknowledged the generous behaviour of<br />

the A''iscount, and for himself and his sisters discharged him of all<br />

goods, jewels, ornaments, and money which might be charged against him,<br />

and in all actions which might be corjipetcnt to Lord Johnstone to take<br />

against him thereanent, as well as of all funeral expenses, and binds himself<br />

to give up an inventory of her goods. Lord Julmstonc also ratified certain<br />

bonds of pro'sasion granted to Lady Jane Heming. Sara Maxwell, Countess<br />

of Wigton, died at Edinburgh on 29th March 1G36, and was buried in<br />

the Abbey of Holyrood.'' The following entry occurs in the Register of<br />

Burials, and shows her interment there :<br />

"The twenty-ninth of March this year (1036) died Dame Sara JLixwell,<br />

Viscountess of Airdes, sister to John, Lord Harreis, and v,-as solemnly interred in<br />

the. Abbey Church of Holyroodhouse. This lady was thrice married, first to Sir<br />

John Johnstone of the same, and by him had issue James, now Earl of Hartfell,<br />

Lord Johnstone, and two daughters ; and after his death slie married to her<br />

second husband, John, first Earl of Wigtoii, and by him had issue one onlie<br />

daughter;- and after his death she married to lier third husband Hugh IMont-<br />

gomerej-, Lord Viscount of Airdes, in the Kingdom of Ireland, and by him had<br />

no issue."<br />
