Tliat charter bears no date, but it must iiave been granted between 1105,
when King "William succeeded liis brother King Malcolm, and llDl, v.lien
Eobert Bruce the son of the grantee is proved to have been dead. Tlic
confirmation of King A^'illiam now recited bears to have been granted at
" Locniaban." ^

The Christian name of Tiobert prevailed so much it? t];e Bruce family as
to be almost hereditary in the eight generations v/hich existed between the
father of the Eobert J'.iuce, first of Annandale, and his descendant Eobert
Jlruce of Annandale and King of Scotland. The fourth Lord, of Aunandale
appears to have been on the same ternis of intimacy with King William
as had subsisted betv.een King David and the first Bruce of Annandale.
William Bruce granted several charters of lands in Annan.dale, v.djieh are
printed in this v, orlc.
The fifth Bruce of Annandale was Eobert, v,ho succeeded his father
William Bruce. Eobert married the rrinccss Isabel, second daugliter of
David, Earl of Huntingdon, youriger brother of King William the Lion.
