About the same date, Sir Adam Johusloue was also .declared to be respon-<br />

sible for the sum of -10 merks which his grandfather had been adjudged to pay<br />

In January 1509 a decree of the lords of council was given against Sir<br />

Adam Johnstone under circumstances which appear to connect him with the<br />

conllict at Loehmabeu on St. Magdalen'.'; day, liSl. At that battle John<br />

]\irkpatrick, son of John Kirkpatrick in JIfslybray, had taken prisoner an<br />

Englishman named '\^'iiliam ^lusgrave. This man had been liberated for<br />

eighty "augell uobillis of gold," which had been paid to "William Irvine of<br />

Ikmshaw, for whom Sir Adam Johnstone liecame security that he vould hand<br />

llie ransom to Kirkpatrick. This, however, liad evidently not been done, and<br />
