First, it is ordained by the Lord Justice, vith consent of Eouert, Lord<br />

Maxwell, as stev. urd of Anuaudale, great warden of the west marches, and<br />

the others named, as follows : That as tlie king has granted remission to<br />

the inhabitants of the above districts who have gone and received coni-<br />

pouiturs for all crimes before this " aii'," so that they may know the<br />

king's clemency, and live in obedience to him, and as all the inhabitants<br />

being accused, and receiving remissions, promiseil " be the extention and<br />

vphalding of thair rycht handis " to live as true lieges, and never to<br />

commit crimes, but if any are committed tlicy arc to be punished ; therc-<br />

foie the lords and barons, etc., have bound themselves, for the peace of the<br />

realm, that if any man on their lands commit such crimes they shall<br />

themselves immediately punisli the trespassers or deliver them to the<br />

warden, and if they be fugitive, shall forfeit their goods, while if any of<br />

the lords and otiiers are negligent iu this they tliemselves sliall be punished.<br />

Item, If any party offended or hurt by the committers of any crimes think<br />

that any lord or baron on whose lauds the trespassers dwell, will not do them<br />

justice, they shall complain to the warden, who shall order the trespassers<br />

to be sent to him, and in case of refusal, shall apprehend and punish<br />

them, or send them to the king's justice for trial. Item, Any lord or<br />

, baron in future acting or pleading for a thief or resetter of theft shall be<br />

held as infamous. Lord Maxwell, as steward and warden, has faithfully<br />

promised, iu presence of the Lord Justice, that if any person within the<br />

bounds named commit the crimes specified ho shall punish them to the<br />

uttermost, as he has authority. Lastly, it is ordained, with consent of<br />

Lord Maywell, that he shall for the space of a yeo.r hold his steward<br />

courts nitiithly, and make enquiries for and punish thieves and other<br />

criminals ; and that he shall hold similar courts in Eskdale, Ewesdale, and<br />

AVauchopedalc, and his warden courts, tluit tlie inhuliitauts may be brought<br />
