1400, of llie wrong done to him, and renounced his allegiance to the King of<br />

<strong>Scotland</strong>. The Earl of Dunbar and lilareli subsequently made hostile inroads<br />

Albany, for liberty to ri.'.turu liouie. ])uring ihe absence of the Earl of<br />

Dunbar and :darcli, iVom 1400 till 1400, Archibald, fourth Eail of Douglas,<br />

obtained possession of the loid^liip of Danbar and the estates of th.e earldom<br />

of March, as v eil as the loidship of Annandale. Eeing in^ssessed of these<br />

lenitories, Douglas declined to agree to the restoi-ation of ilarch uuIgss he<br />

obtained tlie castle of Loclmuiben and the lordship of Annandale, iu lieu of the<br />

cas'le of Durdjar and the earldom of ilarch. Following out that arrangement,<br />

p. charter v.'as granted by the regent, Duhe of Albaiiy, at Haddington, on -d<br />

October 1409, to his cousin Arclnbaid,Earl of Douglas and Lord of Galloway,<br />

of the lordship of Annandale. The charter narrates that the fee of the lord-<br />

,shi]i of Annandale belonged to Geoige of ])unbar, son and heir of George, Eail<br />

of ]\Iarch, and that Geoi'ge the son and Geoige llie earl resigned the fee and<br />

frank-tenement at Haddington, iu pre^^elu•.e of most part of the lords and barons<br />

of tlie kingdom. The lordship of Annandale -vvas to be held by the Earl of<br />

Douglas and the heiis-male of liis body, whom failing, by the Earl of March<br />

and his nearest lawful heirs whomsoever.'<br />

The lordship of Annandale appears to have been enjoyed by Ldack Agnes<br />

as jart of tlse inheritance of her i'athor, tlie renowned regent, and her brother<br />
