the inhaliitants.i
During lCr)2 there is little to record of the earl and his movements. In
Januaiy of that j'car he again journeyed to Edinburgh hj' "Wandell aird
r.iggar, spending two nights at Inglistou Bridge ; hut he retunred theuec in
the beginning of February, spending the night of the 2d at Caruwath, and the
next day at Hessilside, the residence for the time of the Marquis of Douglas,
who the following day accompanied him to ]\Iofrat and Lochwood. Sonretime
during this year, but before August, the Earl of Ilartfell lost his third wife
by death. The countess made her will at Edinburgh on -ith Jul}' 1C48, in
which, after recommending herself to God, " beleiveing assuredlie to be saved
be his frie mercie throw the oulie merits of Jesus Chryst, my redeimer," and
directing her body "to be buried aviiong the faithfull in the most modest way
and in the neirest convenient place quhair it sail please God to call vpon
me out of this lyff," she appointed her " weilbelouet husband, James, Erie of
Ilartfell," her onl}' executor, and made a number of bequests to members of
his family and also legacies to Margaret, Countess of Carnwath, and Dame
Jlagdaleu Carnegie, Lady Kilbirnie, her daughters.-
During his long tenure of the family estates of Johnstone, the Earl of
Hartfcll, amidst many trials and sufferings in connection with his loyal and
covenanting principles, not only consolidated his feudal rights to several of the
old Jolmstone estates, but also made numerous important adcitions to tiiem.
It is unnecessary to relate the whole of these, especially as the more interesting
portions of them have been noticed in the previous part of this memoir,
where tjie acquisition of ]\Ioffatdale and Evandalc are stated in connection
with the peerages of Hartfell, Moflatdalc, and Evaudale, granted to the earl.
