During lCr)2 there is little to record of the earl and his movements. In<br />

Januaiy of that j'car he again journeyed to Edinburgh hj' "Wandell aird<br />

r.iggar, spending two nights at Inglistou Bridge ; hut he retunred theuec in<br />

the beginning of February, spending the night of the 2d at Caruwath, and the<br />

next day at Hessilside, the residence for the time of the Marquis of Douglas,<br />

who the following day accompanied him to ]\Iofrat and Lochwood. Sonretime<br />

during this year, but before August, the Earl of Ilartfell lost his third wife<br />

by death. The countess made her will at Edinburgh on -ith Jul}' 1C48, in<br />

which, after recommending herself to God, " beleiveing assuredlie to be saved<br />

be his frie mercie throw the oulie merits of Jesus Chryst, my redeimer," and<br />

directing her body "to be buried aviiong the faithfull in the most modest way<br />

and in the neirest convenient place quhair it sail please God to call vpon<br />

me out of this lyff," she appointed her " weilbelouet husband, James, Erie of<br />

Ilartfell," her onl}' executor, and made a number of bequests to members of<br />

his family and also legacies to Margaret, Countess of Carnwath, and Dame<br />

Jlagdaleu Carnegie, Lady Kilbirnie, her daughters.-<br />

During his long tenure of the family estates of Johnstone, the Earl of<br />

Hartfcll, amidst many trials and sufferings in connection with his loyal and<br />

covenanting principles, not only consolidated his feudal rights to several of the<br />

old Jolmstone estates, but also made numerous important adcitions to tiiem.<br />

It is unnecessary to relate the whole of these, especially as the more interesting<br />

portions of them have been noticed in the previous part of this memoir,<br />

where tjie acquisition of ]\Ioffatdale and Evandalc are stated in connection<br />

with the peerages of Hartfell, Moflatdalc, and Evaudale, granted to the earl.<br />

The other lands to which the earl's feudal titles were completed may be<br />
