John Johnstone of Johnstone had issue four sons and three diuighters.<br />

1. Jarnes Johnstono, who prsdfccascd his father. Of him a brief nuticc<br />

2. liobort Johnstone, second son by the firsb marriage. He received from his<br />

father the lands of Uaccleuch, situated in Avondale or Evandale, wliere<br />

the ruins of the former house of Raeclcuch arc conspicuous near the<br />

water of Evan. T>j the same deed this lloberfc Johnstone was provided<br />

to the parsonage of Lochmaben. In 1505 he and his brother John had<br />

a remission for an alleged attack on another Johnstone. In 15S0 lie<br />

gave u]i an inventory of efTccts belonging to his mother, Elizabeth<br />

Jardinc, and v.-as confirmed her executor-dative. He married Marion.<br />

Maxwell, who was styled "Lady Garnesalloch, elder,"—and in 1571<br />

they received a charter from Kobert Douglas, provost of Lincluden, of<br />

the lands of Ernemynie, in the barony of Crossmichael and stewartry of<br />

Kirkcudbright. These lands had been left by Eobert Johnstone's grandfather,<br />

James Johnstone of Johnstone, to his son Simon Johnstone, who<br />

in lo-tG resigned them and otliers in favour of his brother John John-<br />

stone of Johnstone. Kobert Johnstone of Eaecleuch died at Carnsalloch,<br />

where he resided, on 10th ISfay 1592. He Avas survived by his wife,<br />

who died on or after the .31st October IGOl, when she made her testa-<br />

ment, and inventorj' of licr goods to her son Eobert. He left issue a son,<br />

Hubert Johnstone, who succeeded him, and another son named i\[ungo,<br />

with, apparently, other cluklren who are not. named, perhaps only<br />

daughters.-<br />

Eobert Johnstone, the second of Enecleueh, died ; bout 1G!37, leaving<br />

three sons, Eobert, William, and Alexander, and a daughter, Elizabeth,<br />

wife of James Grierson. The sons died before 1G5G, the two younger<br />

without issue, and the eldest, Eobert Johnstone of .Stapleton, succeeded<br />

only by a daughter, Mary Johnstone. Mungo Johnstone above-named<br />

liad a son, Eobert, who died vrithout issue about 1G30.<br />
